Removing the rear speakers?

Hi! I'm most likely going to replace the rear speakers in my convertible, or atleast put some sound dampening back there. I couldn't figure out how to access them though, can anyone help me with this?

You have to take the interior panel off to get at them. The speaker grill is heat staked to those panels from the back side. To remove the interior panel you have to take out the rear seat and backrests, remove a couple push in connectors, then pull out the bottom of the panel to release 3 push in fasteners along the door opening. Then lift up to release the push in fasteners along the top of the panel.

So is it mostly straightforward then?

yes, especially after you’ve done it once.

Mineeee - helpful diagrams, I forgot some of the details for removing the trim pieces. The screws and seat belt bolt specifically.

The rear seat back instructions are not very clear. There is a bolt between the seat backs that needs to be removed and then the retaining lever needs to rotate up. To remove the seat back you tilt the seat forward to about a 45 degrees angle to align a pin on the pivot rod with the slot on the outside mounting hole. See detail 1 in the bottom image and notice the diagonal slot through the hole. Once the aligned correctly the back rest can be pulled toward the center of the car to remove it.

Ok, I figured everything out except the rear seat backrests. The seats won't fold down for some reason so I can't access the bolt really. I made sure they were unlocked, but they still won't budge. Any suggestions? Is there any way I can take the seats out without having to fold them down? That bolt is hard to access when it's upright.

They need to pivot forward. There is a release on the seat back that can be accessed from the trunk. Try to release them to pivot forward that way

Yeah seems jammed unfortunately. :( I made sure they were unlocked and pulled the release, but they wouldn't move. Neither of them move. Do they need to be pulled hard? I wasn't pulling very hard because I'm worried about breaking them.

No, mine don’t require any force to release. Strange that both sides would be jammed. You have the original seats?

unfortunately unless you release the seats so they can rotate forward I don’t see any way they will come out.

Are you sure you unlocked them up by the seatbelt? The lock circles in red. Ive locked them instead before now by mistake. If you did then maybe the cable release in yellow came off the handle in the trunk. Thats a known weak point for the front doors, but it would be a bit odd for both sides to fail, especially as they are used so infrequently. If all else fails did you "try a bigger hammer" to get them down. I'd double / triple check the shoulder lock first though.

EDIT; Just noticed item 11 is described as "emergency release". but Ive no idea if that is what it says it is, or how it might work...

Yeah I find it really weird that both would fail too. I've only had the car for a year so I don't know the last time someone put them down. Unlocked is when the shoulder locks are in the horizontal position right? I'll give it another shot.

[/QUOTE]

The emergency release is a tool that is stored under the rear seat cushion a few inches aft of the front edge. Its used to release the seat backs by hooking the levelers on the back of the seat back and pulling up. You lower the hook end between the seat back and the rear deck (much easier to do when the top is down). I've had to use it when the battery was dead and I couldn't open the trunk to get to it. I have seats out of a different car installed and my ignition key doesn't work with the seat back lock.

Unlocked position
Slot should be aligned in direction of vehicle when unlocked. At least, mine is...

Thank you both figured it out, just needed to be wiggled a bit and it came right down. Got the speakers out, I'm looking forward to better sound :D Only problem is, I broke one of the clips on the rear panel, anyone know where to find them?

Go to realoem.com to find the part number by exploded assembly diagram then you can go to any of the etailers like ESC (OEM) or eBay ( OEM and knockoffs) and search by the part number. You might be able to find generic fasteners at an auto parts store that will work. I bought a big assortment from eBay but none are quite right where I need them.
