Expand Difeence Between 2006,7 and 8 R52

I have been looking at quite a few sites and forum entries and it seems like the chain of documented changes seems to end at 2005 or some will talk about 2006 then the feature and improvement focus seems to on the hardtop.

I have pretty much decided on a 1st gen Cabrio - Cooper S with 6 speed Manual - looking at prices the 2006 seems to be cheap, the 2007 and 2008 are noticeably more expensive even in cases of Identical miles and condition - my feeling on a car over 8 yrs old its about miles and condition for value not year unless there is distinct advantages to the newer one.

Can somebody tel me what the difference is after 2006 on the rag tops

The gen 1 “refresh” happened in 2005 (same year the cabrio came online in the US). In 2007, the hardtops changed to the gen 2 design (r56) while the cabrio carried on in gen 1 design for two more years. The car was mechanically unchanged until 09 when the r57 cabrio replaced it.

To my knowledge, there are no real mechanical differences after 06 for the cabrio......there were color and package changes, but I think that was it. An example is the “sidewalk” package near the end of the run that had really nice lounge leather seats, badging, etc. I think the price difference you are seeing between the 06’s and the 07-08’s may just be because they are just a bit “newer”......and the later cars may have just been more option-loaded because of the special trims offered. Seems like most of the 08 cabrio that I’ve seen have been pretty loaded (real leather, etc).

hope that helps!

2005 start, 2006 they updated the seats with the little passenger occ sensor (realliy 1/2005). 2007+ the radio head unit was updated. 2008 some diffrent color and special editions like the sidewalk editiona nd the last of the supercharged editions.

I have an R52 and bought it new back in late 2004.

Mechanically, the wheel lug bolt and therefore the bearing hub are different. M12 up to around 6/2006 production and M14 from that date forward. The Gen2's went to larger lug bolt.

When I go to the autoparts store I tell them I have an 06 as it cuts down on the confusion.

So pretty much it’s all about price vs condition - no real difference means I will be hunting the 2006/7/8 and just just see

Good luck, look for the end of the series special editions, those are what I would look for.

While there are no big differences, there are some smaller ones. For example, my 2006 (sept 2006 build) had an Aux input in the glovebox. I didn’t order the aid input, but supposedly the 2007MY cars started to get these inputs standard.

Also, I agree with the idea of getting a 2008 sidewalk or other special edition. If you can find one and can drive a manual , a last of the supercharged edition would be my ideal car because it has the JCW package and Sidewalk package.
