Headlight change

Tonight I turned the Xenon headlights on and the line is only about 10' in front of the car on dim. High seems ok. Seems like a block out out front. What could be wrong now?
05 R52. Never had a problem before.

The hood got slammed, or you hit a bump really hard, and the projector beam is now pointing at the ground?? There is a ball and socket in the headlight and when you slam the hood too hard it pops loose. Check to see if that's the problem. Not sure if you can re-attach it with taking the headlight apart, or the lens off.

I have a spare with this problem. I'll try to take a pic of it.

Auto leveler got bumped or bent on the front or rear suspesnion. Or that socket poped out or broke like on the Gen 2 MINIs

Have not had time to investigate the headlight problem. I do have an image here that shows what's up tho. If this worked it will show the lights on low beam on my greenhouse door. The car is 8 feet from the door and the lines you see are about left 30" and right 18".

I can't remember a trauma incident that befell the front of the car. No wheelbusters or hood slams or bone jarring stops. I just started it up one morning and that's what I had.

I did rebuild the brakes successfully just before this happened but it wasn't the next day.

Does the operation of these units have a software component? Are these in any way controlled by the central computer system or is it entirely a mechanical/electrical device?

I kind of question why both lights would go wacko at once?

You may have bumped not the leveling mechanism itself, but one of the ride height sensors on the left side suspension (front and rear). They are used to determine the front/back tilt of the suspension and the headlights are leveled accordingly. You might have done something while working on the brakes.

This could be the problem. I'd like to see a photo of them in place. I can see from your reference what they look like but would like to know how to adjust them.

They simply bolt onto the suspension and there is no adjustment, but they can get bumped out of position or disconnected.

There are photos in this document: http://www.bmw-planet.com/lib/mini/BODY%20CONTROL.pdf. Look on page 48 (Fig. 49 Front DHL Sensor and Fig. 50 Rear DHL Sensor). And before you ask, here are other documents available: http://www.bmw-planet.com/lib/mini/

If you have the Bentley manual, it has some other images.

Looks like the one is level, the other ones is down , I think maybe the internal mount on the xenon might have popped loose or broke. Its inside the housing. Look at the inside of the housing mount.
