Hello friends - I have a 2008 JCW convertible. Sadly, the rear window was smashed by kids (presumably) last evening. I called my local Mini dealership and was told I must replace the entire rag, the part is 2,000 and the labor is roughly 1,600 (10 hour job). I thought I would be able to replace just the window :(


Anyone have this happen before? is there an alternative after market maybe? I hate the thought of putting nearly 4K into a 6 year old car with 120K miles. thanks !

 

See here on the Genuine MINI top. Have not seen to much aftermarket and the ones I have seen did not look as good fit and finish.

I would also check with your insurance company as the rear glass is bonded to the convertible top and requires the whole top replacement. Your insurance should pick up the repair.

It also gives you a chance to possibly change the color.

Thank you. I called my insurance company and it is covered as well as 80% of a rental car up to $500. Looks like I will have a $500 deductible and a small amount of a rental car.


Such a shame. But on the bright side, having never had an insurance claim before this will not effect my rates. thank you for the feedback and information !!

another tip: This will be a project for the MINI dealership or install body shop. Make sure they know what they are doing ahead of time, its time consuming. If you do have a MINI dealership ( which i recommend) do this they can sometimes provide MINI free loaners dependent on where you are and if you call ahead and schedule.

Cover the rear window as much as you can so you don't get any water in there. Plastic sheeting and heavy duty tape for temp.

Robbins specializes in replacement tops for 'verts


and I'd think hard about using the dealership or a standard body shop ... convert' tops are NOT their thing. The Robbins site has a list of recommended installers or check your local area ... you'll probably get a better result from someplace with experience . . . (the dealership most likely will subcontract the work and add a markup ... find out who they use)
