R52 Adjusting the Top.....
Adjusting the Top.....
Can the point at which the top stops (when it's put down) be adjusted?
I'm wondering this because it seems to me that if it didn't fold up quite so tight, the rubbing wear might not be so great. I've got an '06 JCW cab that has the usual wear spots and one is actually a hole. Fortunately, I'm still under warranty and will be getting it fixed. But I have a friend down the street with the same wear on her 06 and unfortunately, she didn't notice it until she was out of warranty.
So, if it is adjustable, will this slow further wear? And for the existing wear, is there any way to patch/protect?
Thanks much!

LMAO.....too funny. I just got back from the dealers today (an hour and a half away) for just that reason. There is a Service Bulletin on this problem. It requires 2 bolts and then the adjustment. With these bolts and adjustment, it doesn't close as tight.
In my case I had to pay for it, (a service bulletin means "we know we did something wrong.....but we're not calling it a recall, so we're not paying for it"). It took them about an hour (and they adjusted the cable while they were in there, at no charge, so no snapping cable) and it goes down "much" easier. Even though it cost me, I'm very pleased with the results. And yes, they said it will eliminate any further wear.
If we have the Service Bulletin up here in Canada, then you should definitely have it in the States. If for some reason, your dealer tells you they don't have it, let me know and I'll see if my dealer will give me the Bulletin info, so you can pass it on.
As for repairs; there is a company that in Canada says they do conv. top repairs and dying (http://www.colorglocanada.com/) However, the U.S. site http://www.colorglo.com/ doesn't mention conv. tops?? It would be worth it though, to see if there is a ColorGlo dealer in your area and if they do tops.

Thank you gojogo, much appreciated......and the feeling's mutual
I thought they fixed the problem and the 2010's didn't have the same issue. What happened was that I called the dealer a few weeks ago and complained about the wear spots starting (only minor so far). It was then that he pulled up the bulletin, but he didn't mention if it was for specific years. I'll try to get in touch with then tomorrow and see exactly what years it covers.

Kemo,
Thanks for making the call. My '06 has the wear spots and my warranty will be running our soon, so I'd like to have that service bulletin number in my back pocket when I speak with the service writer. Much obliged for your efforts.

I just spoke to the service manager and he said that the service bulletin that he has is for the 05 model (he read right off the sheet for me and gave me the exact production dates, I forget exactly what they were....but they were all 2005 dates). However, as he explained, when he is looking for a service bulletin, he uses my serial number. So as he said, it is quite possible that there could be a completely different service bulletin for later years.
It wouldn't hurt to tell your service manger that you know there was a service bulletin for the 05 convertible, that calls for the replacement of 2 bolts and you'd like to know if there is a bulletin for later models. Hope this helps. Like I said, I can notice a real difference in the way the top goes down.
