Was that a one story or two story log cabin?

Depends on conditions... I can get 100 feet or more of range outta my remote, pressed to my lips. With key properly making contact with something else conductive... I could see it with substantially better than 10-20 feet range in a purse or pocket.

And, if you have single-press unlock enabled (I do) then all it takes is:
One quick press to unlock...
Then a press and hold any time later (once it's unlocked) to do the windows and sunroof.

Does NOT take sophisticated timing to make it work.

Wow! You guys must have a better set of keys than the ones they gave me..

I can stand right next time my car and it may or may not open the top without the planets being perfectly lined up.
I do however have a remote for my garage door opener that I have to be very careful with because if you accidentally
bump it within a 1/2 mile of the house you may return to find that your garage door has been open all day.

I'm with you, man. Can't see how it can happen even if I had a coin or two in my pocket and single press for unlock turned on, but oh well.

I had this feature in my last car and never in 5+ years did I open the car, windows or sunroof accidently. The frustrating part was this was something I knew was on the car and looking forward to using.

Bottom line here is that the dealers are being lazy and not telling/asking people their preferences, and then pretending like they are doing us a favor by protecting us from these terrible features.

I've just had my car into the dealer for an issue with the window mechanisms and I asked them to enable the remote top opening.

My dealer said Mini disabled this feature from 2006 onwards - anyone want to dispute that for me!

I have a 2008 purchased about 1.5 months ago. My dealer enabled the key to open the top... convenience opening. They actually program the car, not the keys. Works great!

That was almost funny. I immediately called my dealer and they were insistent that you must have a coupe and talking about the sunroof.......they're adamant that the 08 convertible no longer has this feature. I'm making them triple check.

(This is of course the same dealer who can't find an issue where my windows don't get lowered using the top lowering mechanism.)

It's turned on with my 2008, too. The dealer is blowing smoke. Have them call Naperville, IL (where I got mine) if they need confirmation or instructions on what to enable.

I took delivery on my 2008 cabrio back in March and mine has the convenience opening feature. I had to ask the MA multiple times for all of the programming options and she finally went over them all with me the morning of my delivery. It's definitely still there!

I did not know about any of those functions... being I am new to Mini's. My salesman told me about the functions and offered to have it programmed when he was going over the car giving me the post-sale overview.

This one gets quite interesting..........

I spoke more with the service manager at Rasmussen in Portland, OR who's done a lot of digging for me and here's what he's found:

- the "official" Mini USA line is that the convenience roof opening is no longer an option and they have memo's to that effect.

but

- thanks to Cubfan (above), I put him onto the Naperville dealership. It seems they have found a workaround so that it can still be enabled (after all nothing's really changed in the electronics.....you would think).

I'm expecting that once they get the details, the dealer here will enable mine too.

So - always take the dealers word........NAM knows better!

My 2008 MCSC has it. I didn't request any particular settings, but I'm glad I have it.

I use it every now and then to frighten the natives into submission when a solar eclipse is not readily available.

Wow, glad they made it work for you. Naperville has been good to me, too.

I saw "cubfan" pop up in my email as responding to my thread, and I thought the subject might be baseball, not MINIs.

Thanks for keeping it on cars. Still a lot of baseball to be played, but it is tough to win a division when you can't score runs. At least I get to listen to the game in my cool convertible.

I'll dispute it.... My MCSc is an 07 and it opens the top using the key and drops the windows.

My 06 does it just fine. But I had to make them program it properly and it took them two tries.

Cubby..thanks for the post above with the right sequence. I have had the hardest time using the remote to "drop my top". I am going to give your sequence a try at lunch.

Yikes, what a tough series. What Gagme did was pretty low-class, but otherwise it was some compelling baseball with a few months left to go... seemed like September. And (of course) I like the result, but promise not to rub it in.

Back to cars, this looks like it was a helpful thread for many.

Brewers fans are hoping that they will suspend Gag-me for the season... That way they won't have to pay that bust all his money. Plenty of baseball left to play. Thanks for not rubbing it in. I grew up in the North Suburbs of Chicago, and have already taken a beating at the hands of my family.

Back to Minis... This has really been a good thread for people. I took the car back and had them program the feature for me this week. I have already used it a half-dozen times. It is a shame that there are dealers like the one I am dealing with that don't communicate what is available, or do/say anything to avoid extra work. I just picked up a new Mini with a co-worker last night, and the experience at another dealership (in Northern Illinois) was 180 degrees different from what I experienced here in Wisconsin.

I'd be more worried about your manager. The call came from him. He's showing signs of the same kind of late-season disaster that he orchestrated last year... much of it from not keeping the team under control and pulling stupid stunts like that.

Pinella didn't retaliate, and he'd have kept the team under control. Any players that tried something like Fielder would be benched for a game.

Sorry to hear about your Wisconsin dealer. Mine's been great. I had a blown water pump, and the dealer offered to have it towed 150 miles on a flatbed to repair it, and then tow it back to me. I decided to drive it instead because I wanted the road trip. And I had them program the auto door-locks while I was there (doors lock when the speed is up to about 5mph, and then unlock when you take out the key).

Finally got it installed on my '08 this morning......

I was told "sorry for the confusion - when Mini told us it was no longer an option they were referring to the '09 model".

I just had my 07 cabrio in for it's first service and I had the remote feature turned on. The dealer charged it as warrenty work so it was no cost to me. All you have to do is ask for this to be turned on, there is a service bulletin for this. Also had the day time running lights turned on, there was minimal cast around $40.
