R52 Loud squeak when closing top
Loud squeak when closing top
My 2007 cabrio top makes a very loud (and obnoxious) squeak
when it closes after it has been open for a while (more the 12 hours). Although I would like to keep the top open indefinitely, even in California I have to close it every once in a while
. Has anyone else had this problem and can it be fixed without a dealer trip?

I thought they all did that... mine does... I tried lubing every joint I could find... but didn't make any difference... As the OP said, only does it when I leave the top down overnight or longer...
Mine has done it for a year and a half, and probably 200+ noisy closing cycles, and doesn't seem to hurt anything... but does sound obnoxious...

I've tried lubricating everything I could in the top (sometimes blindly sticking a can of WD40 in between the layers of fabric and spraying in the general direction of moving parts) and nothing works.
And the dealer has had no luck. I think MINI has told them that nothing can be done and they won't pay for warranty labor spent trying to figure it out.
It's a little thing (most of the time) but one of the many reasons I am ready to trade for a new MINI coupe.

I too would be interested to hear if anyone gets this resolved. When I had my last service I mentioned this as a item too but no joy. When I got it back it still did it. Didn't know if they forgot or failed to eliminate it.
No deal breaker for me and it's not enough to spoil my enjoyment of the top, but if someone or some dealer HAS the solution I'd be even happier.

I've just accepted it as one of the quirky charms that will disappear in the R57 or whatever they are going to call the next one. As in "Remember how the top would squeal when you put it up if you left it down all night (laughs and sips beer).
Our squeals about half the time upon closing, usually after an extended topless drive. We just tolerate it for the five seconds or so that it happens. It sure beats the manual closing of the roof that our old '92 VW Cabriolet required.
I had my last car* 25 years. I hope to have my Mini as long (and at that point, DMV will probably insist I quit driving
).Cheers,
