Wind deflector

Hello all, I have 2006 mini s convertible. Mine came with the mini wind deflector and carry bag for it. I have long hair about to the middle if my back. I noticed with the top down my hair blows all over especially front to back, but no biggie, so i decided after reading about how awesome the wind screen is to put it in, well its in and no difference - my hair is blowing all over the place and only at speeds of 30- 45. so my questiuon is how come so many see a difference and i don't? is anyone putting windows up too? that defeats the purpose. It was a little windy out to begin with. I will try it again and then take it out and if i still see no difference i think i will sell it for what i saw one go for on evil-bay.

Definitely windy with the windows down no matter what - but LESS windy with the wind deflector up. With the windows and wind deflector up, it's quite calm in the cabin... just the top of your head gets wind...

I still didn't notcie a difference but maybe its at faster speeds? i was only driving around at 30 - 45 and it was the same without the deflector, but have not tried the highway.

Yeah - speed has a LOT to do with it... I use mine at warp speed and it makes a TON of difference...

Long hair - what scrunchies are for.

Without the wind deflector your hair goes almost straight forward from the low pressure created in the cabin. With the wind deflector installed the turbulence gets broken up and your hair may still fly around a little but nothing as extreme. I find it VERY effective. My wife and daughter always used a visor cap or at least put their hair in a ponytail. When the weather cools down you'll find the wind deflector really extends your driving season. Hey, it's a convertible, that's what it's all about, wind in the hair. ALL convertibles have similar issues. It's the law of nature, high pressure wants to fill the void caused by low pressure.

I'd say you really need to put the windows up to notice a difference, especially at low speeds. As for that defeating the purpose of the wind deflector - I'm sure many people argue that the wind deflector defeats the purpose of a convertible!

I do have one, and I take it out if I expect to take a long highway trip - where I do keep it and the windows up. But 95% of the time when just driving 25-50mph I don't use it (or the windows).

The MINI convertible is not the car to get if you want a calm cabin with the windows down. It's just not designed to channel the wind properly. My Z4 was much better at it, as you might guess it should be. And I've heard the S4/A4 convertible is amazing when it comes to this.

I see a huge difference when I use the convertible w/o wind deflector.. in the highway at speed over 45-50 . However, I never motor with windos up and top down .... If I am tired of the wind / sun I just keep the sunroof open..
I see a lot of people (in non MINIs as well) driving windows up and top down to me is like wearing sandals with black socks..

Heh heh... see, I don't care what I look like. I care what I FEEL like... and with top down & windows up, I can get the full sun cabrio experience down to 20F, or while I'm talking on the headset... can't do either comfortably with the windows down... or with the sunroof open...

Agreed. Though Brownflyer's windscreen does work well with windows down, windows up still works better.

A friend put a small non OEM and cheaper net between the back of front seats, for her it works well .. and allows you to have passengers in the back seat.
The MINI wind deflector comes with its own storage bag perfect for the winter.
Agreed, people should motor and dress the way they like .. more power to you and I'm glad to read that you have the headset... I can't stand people talking on the phone while driving with one hand

Can someone help me with an issue. I just purchased a MINI Wind Deflector from a private party. It has cracked pieces in the middle where it is to be folded. Can someone take a photo of what it is to look like so maybe this one can be fixed/glued.
Also does anyone know how it is to fold into the bag?

Is it actually broke at the hinge that folds? If so, there may be no fixing it I broke mine about a year ago-didn't re-read the instructions It became useless. I hope you weren't sold one that is broken

I have Brownflyers now & it works just fine. Plus, the doggies can still sit in the back seat

I don't know what it is supposed to look like but there is a piece right before the hinge where a little notch looks like it should fit. if that makes sense.

I will do that tonight when i get home from work, thank you for getting back to me so quickly. I would like to see what it should or shouldn't look like. Maybe it is just my lack of knowledge! let's hope.

You have to put the front and back windows up. If the windows are down, wind blows like crazy and might as well not have a wind deflector.

Coincidentally, today I was tooling around town and out to the Presidio for lunch. There were five other cars [not MINIs, an Audi, Lexus, Miata, Volvo, Saab] with their tops down.

Oddly, everyone had wind deflectors. Another oddity, all men were driving, women were in the passenger seats. All had their windows up. All but one of the women had a hat on. All the guys, including me, had ball caps on.

I dunno, but if one was looking to see what one is supposed to wear when riding with the top down you would think the above uniform was it and that the windows stay up when the wind deflector is in use.

I just got my Brownflyer wind deflector [last week] and today was my first real test drive comparing the ride with and without it installed.

Probably best test was with the girl I was with, who has long blond hair. I drove without the windows up and she asked "Why is it so windy, I thought that thing [she does not talk the talk] you bought cuts down on the wind. How come my hair is flying all over the place?" She was perturbed, not enjoying the MINI with the top down.

So then I slickly put up both windows at the same time. The wind cut way down and she looked impressed. But she put a ball cap on after that, but only because I said she was squinting from the sun and she was going to get crows feet someday. She flipped out and put on that ball cap in record time.

When I went down the freeway at about 70 the wind pats the top of my head and agitates the hair. So if I was in a situation where my hair had to remain neat, I'd have to put the top up. But the Brownflyer definitely cuts the wind down compared to not having a deflector.

Here is my MINI today, when I took a few pics with my cell phone camera [crappy shots.] But you can see the Brownflyer wind deflector installed.
