R50/53 Mazda lifts '69 Michael Caine IJ quote for billboard
Nobody will probably get this reference except Mini owners.

Since I don't think anyone in the new film is supposed to be British, and doubt if the most famous quote from the original made it into the remake, it's still a little weird that Mazda would use it at this particular time, even though it can be taken generically.
I think it's a hoot!

>>It is offensive marketing against the Mini....

>>Auto Marketing is not that stealth...
Well given Mazda's build quality might be the only Japanese make lower than MINI's, the doors just might fall off on their own.

I blame Ford for this. The pure Mazda B series trucks (the ones up until 1993) were great, as were many of their cars.

A friend of mine in college must have put 250k on one of those and they were pretty rough miles. They were tough machines.

Dad had nearly 220K on his when he sold it. Yes, someone bought it. It still ran great, oil was always clean at the change. It was just near needing a clutch replacement (not a cheap repair on those). I had 150K on mine when it was totaled. I probably would have kept it up until I got my MINI if it hadn't been wrecked. I think the darn thing would have run forever.

Although it would be cool if Mazda lifted it from the movie, I really doubt they did. "I'll blow your doors off" has been used for years. Honda used it with the intro of the new Civic Si a year or two ago. The ad had a picture of a car with the doors lying on the ground as the Civic drove by.
Besides, they forgot the word "bloody".....

Are you concerned about an offense towards Mazda or Mini?
My Mazda source is generally anecdotal. My Miata is nowhere near the league of any of the four Honda's I owned. I chalk up most of that to it being a sports car, but I was forced to have an engine replaced (by Mazda) at 15k miles for a bad engine design. That has to go on Mazda.
And according to the latest JD Powers rankings, Mazda came in near the bottom at 148/1000 to Mini's 166/1000. And that was with the benefit of the Miata and B2000 coming in at the top of their class. As we discussed, I can see this with the B2000. With the Miata, I admit. I am somewhat shocked.

Tom -- My only concern is about statements that paint a broad picture without sufficient pigment. I've read the press release from J.D. Powers and, while they spend a great deal of ink detailing how their "Initial Quality Study" demonstrates a trend toward this and a tendency to that, they do not state specifically what kinds of problems were reported in the "problems per 100 vehicles" nor how many hundreds of vehicle owners were surveyed. A high incidence of transmission failures is not the same as a similar incidence of windshield washer breakdowns -- yet both might easily be given similar weight in this study. Until their methodology is presented along with the data, it's difficult for me to give them full credence.
