Of all of you who actually own minis, and have the sunroof......have any of you had any problems like roof leakage during heavy rains?? I know that the minis are great quality vehicles but sometimes things happen.... ya know? I just wanted to know if it's happened to anyone, and if so how did you go about taking care of it? Was it covered by warranty? Was the dealership helpful in solving the problem??

Thanks

Brother in Seattle (city that rains just a bit, people say) has a MINI Cooper with sunroof. He has had no leakage at all. No problems.

Not one single drop of water has gotten into the MINI from the various door and sunroof seals so far. The way the sunroof seats down into it's closed position instead of just sliding back like most is also a good sign that it will be leak-free for years to come.

I've washed my mini more in a week and a half than any other car I've owned in a lifetime. Not a drop spilled inside

I adpoted MINI into my family back in June and we have had some rains that were so hard I could not even see the front of the bonnet while was driving, NOT A DROP or moisture into the car. I have read about cars stalling, spitting and spuddering in the rain, not mine, it has been GREAT... What a little guy!

I dug through all the pics I took at yesterdays Baltimore MINI meet and found a good one that shows the sunroof open.

As you can see, the larger, front part moves up and back over the back part. Also 2 wind screens pop up at the front. Hope this gives you some idea.

Sorry to rain rain on everyones parade (OK i know that was a really bad pun), however even though I have yet to have a single drop of water enter my car from the sunroof or door seels...it squeeks and rattles like crazy. I know that I probably have an isolated case and I am not discuraging anyone from getting the sunroof (I love it), but after about 2000 miles when the sunroof is fully open it starts squeeking even on smooth pavement. I'm having it checked tommorow (along with some other minor problems) so I'll let everyone know what the fix is if any.

Water is not the problem....the sun is, the sunroof needs a solid sliding cover inside instead of the mesh screen which doesn't block heat or UV rays...can't imagine what the designers were thinking since if it isn't hot or sunny you wouldn't want the mesh screen closed and if it was hot and sunny, you would want a block, but a solid one, not a mesh one....the design makes no since....cheers!

Actually the sliding screens do block heat and UV rays, just not as much as a solid one would. And if you have the sunroof closed, the blacked out glass will block a lot of sunlight. I too would prefer a solid screen, but after being in so many cars that had nothing under the sunroof, I can't really complain.

I am amazed at how cool the black glass keeps the car on 95° days. I feel no heat with the roof and screen closed and the airconditioner works great. My Alfa Romeo 164 had the worst a/c ever so the MINI is a real treat on hot days. I also find that my white roof seems to keep the car cooler when parked in the sun. My Alfa would be roasting and I could feel it radiating on the top of my head so I was always hot. Not in the MINI. I think the roof will be fairly water tight but time will tell. The only draw back I find is the screen's little holes make a sun pattern on my sunglasses that I find really distracting. Usually when the sun is straight down on me. Anyone else find this happens to them?

Awesome!! I'm definately getting the sunroof then! That comes with the premium package anyway and I'll be going with that, so i'm all set when my "Mini Moment" comes I can't wait!!!! the more i think about it the more i want it and wish it were in my driveway right now.......... then again...... if i had one, i'd probably be out driving right now so my driveway would be going through withdrawl!

OK, I keep hearing some (mostly 1) person complain about the lack of a solid block. My chevy cav does not have ANY sort of retractable block on the sunroof, just a lot of black dots on the window as a 'shade'. Never ONCE did I find that the sun was too bright when my sunroof was closed. And the little dots on the window are quite comparable to the retractable screen. Also, my wife has a newer chevy cav., also with a sunroof. Her sunroof has a tint to it, and she has a sliding solid panel to totally block off the sunroof. The ONLY time that the solid panel is used is A: When the sunroof is open, to try to add some shade to protect the eyes, or B: In the winter to try to block out some of the cold that the sunroof is radiating. Theirfor, I totally do not understand the complaints. If you don't want SUN in your car, donot buy the SUN roof. Of course, one of the main complainers do not actually own a MINI anymore, so take their opinion for what it's worth...

Well, personally the sun isn't the issue i was concerned with...... it was the leaking problem.....but that's all cleared up! I love having the sky view..... i can just imagine sitting at a traffic light at night to look up and see the stars.... or parking near the beach and just looking up...... or up by my fathers house near jacksonville florida.... it's all open land..... no street lights or anything so when you look up you can see literally every star in the night sky!!! And having the sun roof open with the breeze and sunlight pour in...... that's just awesome!!! An experience i can now only associate with the mini!!

Another question about the sunroof........ it IS electronic right?? Like.. you push a button and it opens or what???

OOH and off the topic of the sunroof...... i was reading on the miniusa site that the door logs have 2 stage locking or something to that effect?! i couldn't find more info on that...... could you guys explain what that means?

The sunroof is electric.
You press directly up if you just want the back open as a vent.
You press back and it will auto open all the way.
Press back while it is opening and it will stop where you desire.
Press forward and it will auto close, again to stop it partway.
Press forward once more to close the vent.

All done with one button.

I'm not sure what you mean by the 2 stage locks.
You press the wings on the remote key once to unlock the drivers side, twice to unlock passenger and boot (unless you have the key programmed to unlock the boot when you hold the wings down)
I have mine programmed to open the windows and sunroof when i hold down the wings and I love that feature. It's expecially nice when people have their noses pressed to the glass checking out the interior.

That sounds awesome!

I'll probably program mine to do the same when i hold down the button! I just love cars that let you open the windows/sunroof before you've even got in the car! that's too cool! LOL

Some of the opinions in this thread are silly. The sunroof is tinted for comfort when you are in the car. It's not to keep the interior cool. Jeez, the Cooper is all window, so what difference is the light coming in through a tinted sunroof gonna make?? And the screen is there to keep critters and such from flying in while you're tooling down the road with the sunroof open. If you don't mind sharing your seat with a wasp or bee that decides it wants to check out your main squeeze's perfume while your stopped at a light, then by all means, leave it open. Probably provides some high noon relief to those who are follically challenged, too. I even read somewhere that someone complained that the wind noise was too loud when the roof was open! Just how quiet does one expect a 70+ mph wind to be??

Its a big, beautiful sunroof, and the engineers didn't screw up when they designed it.
