Is there a standard for placement...?

I have seen both:

Stripes tight against the 'washer squirters' and running in to the grill almost before the turn down...

AND

Stripes about 3 inches to the outside of the 'washer squirters' and running right into the heart of the grille corner as it makes the turn down...

Thanks!

The roof is also a great place for "temporary" designs. 2 2X3 magnets do very well to cover most of the roof. Click here for link to a previous post with pix. Since these companies can do almost any graphic (more colors = more $), what about the Stars & Stripes or Union Jack (or better yet, both!!!) for a "temporary design." Your many could soon say as much about your mood on a given day as the way you dress!!!

Thanks for the reply Mike. I'm lloking forward to receiving the stripes. So how many have you sold on eBay so far? Did anyone ever tell you this was a great idea?

A WARNING to all those who have bought or are going to buy/make Magnetic Bonnet Stripes.

I left mine on for just 2 1/2 days, and upon taking them off this evening, it looks as though I may have damaged the clearcoat.

Ok, I believe there is some very faint damage to the clearcoat. There is a slight dullness in the paint in the front, on both sides. It is only visible in some lights, and not at all in others. After one wash and wax it's barely noticeable, and I'll probably let it go for a while before bothering to fix it.

I never had a problem before when I removed them daily. But letting it go for over two nights appears to be too long. I could feel when removing the stripes it felt like they were stuck on. It must've rained at night.

I had heard that magnetic material can be damaging to clearcoat if left on for a prolonged period of time, due to moisture. Two to three days, in my experience, is not that long a time at all. I thought they would be fine. I have heard that quite a few people have questioned the quality of the paint on the MINI, and now I'm believing them!!! Just remember to remove them every night, and if possible, try to avoid driving with them in the rain.

I'm going to continue using mine, as I love them! I just have to be a little bit more diligent about removing them at night!

Lesson learned,

~Joe

If this truly is the case then I think FireAnt or whoever is elling them on eBay needs to add to their advertising not to leave them on overnight. Buyer beware is one thing, but if you know or suspect this to be a problem, you should let unsuspecting people know.

I ordered mine and still look forward to seeing how they look. Maybe taking them off each night will still cause clearcoat damage after so many hours of use, even if not consecutively.

I know he put a warning up at MINI2, where he normally posts. I figured I'd put one up here.

I don't think there would be a problem over many hours of non consecutive use, as long as you try to keep them away from moisture, i.e. don't use them on rainy days. This seems to be the main problem.

For occasional daily use however they are great!

Post pics when you have them on, I'd love to see them!

I just received mine in the mail and the notice says to remove at least once a week but says nothing about driving in the rain. As these are obvious issues they shoud be addressed on the eBay site and also in the literature accompanying the stripes.

Check this thread.... CLICK HERE I think you're gonna get an email!

As for driving in the rain, thats my own assumption, based on possible problems with magnetics and moisture... I personally am not going to use them in the rain.

Does it work over a clear bra?

SuperMINI03 I don't know if it will work over clear bra. That's a good question. Are you talking about just down at the front edge of the hood? I know someone in the Houston MINI Motoring Society has a clear bra so I will have to see if it does.

Thanks,

This is definetly something that needs to be tried for a roof design. Print out something cool on large sticker sheets that can be stuck to the magnets. Then just put them on the car. Great for tailgating at concerts or games. Hmmm.....

I second that!!!!! I was in London over Thanksgiving and came home with a magnetic "GB" euro sticker style magnet. Anyway, whenever I left the magnet on for any length of time, dust would collect under the magnet. I would be very careful about taking it off the car as well as cleaning the dust. But, if left for a long time, it will literally act like sandpaper on the clearcoat. I do have some damage to my paint but thankfully, you can't see it unless you looke really hard for it at almost a 160 deg. angle.

So, while I think the stripes look really nice, you're probably better off doing vinyl or just being extremely diligent about removing your stripes after you're done using them ( say, after a day drive or something like that).

Maybe I'm not that picky or maybe it's the white roof, but I had 2 2x3 roof magnets on my MINI for a month straight and noticed no problems. I also had a 2x3 magnet on each door for the same month and noticed no problems (IB). I was careful to clean both the back of the magnets and the surface they were going on before applying, but no other special care.

This thread gave me an idea. You could clear-bra your entire bonnet as long as you wanted stripes as well. You could put the clear bra film pieces on so the seams run front to back right under where the stripes would go. Not only would your entire bonnet be protected, but the clearcoat under the stripes would be protected as well.

If I knew that I wanted permanent stripes I'd give it a go. Anyone else game?

I bought my stripes @ minicooperparts.com

They are the removable ones (is this the one you guys are talking about?)

It came with stripes for the bonnet AND boot for only $25

Anyone else buy them here? If so, will my paint get messed up???
