Got a recent letter from my dealer saying my 03 MC is in "great demand" and they will

pay "above market value", either to just pay the car off, or give on trade for a new MINI.

I'd kind of like to know what their above market value is, but it's 200+ miles one way to Roadshow in Memphis.

Anyone else got anything like this?

Standard dealer junk mail sales technique - ignore it. You can easily find out what the "great demand" is by comparison pricing your car with expired eBay listings or Autotrader listings (subtract $2000 for dealer profit), or going to kbb or edmunds.

Minis are, however, extremely high in retaining a %age of resale value.

What Dixon says is true. I got the same kind of thing when I had a Mazda Protege --- a car I happened to love, but certainly not one people were fighting over to get.

Yup. Marketing BS just trying to get you into the dealership. We saw the same basic campaign from our dealership about this time last year. I know the sales staff pretty well (...used to be one of them...) it was a pretty big bust.

I get these in the mail once or twice a year, even though I no longer even own my '03. They haven't started bugging me to sell my '05 yet (and they might as well not bother!). A dealer will never pay you as much for your car as you can get for it in a private sale, unless they create the illusion of doing so by monkeying around with other numbers in the process of selling you a new car. By "above market value," they mean 20% below market value.

They just want to get you in the door to sell you another car, and keep the payment train going.

That's for sure! As if a Suburban can POSSIBLY be in demand! Absolutely insane!

GM has thousands on the lot, gas prices going up, used ones flooding the market, and I get a letter saying that they're in demand? Yeah right.

I asked the local dealership about one I got. The external marketing company sends them out. In Vegas, they sweeten the pot by offering a $10 or $20 gas card with the valuation. If I'm going near the dealership, I drop in and they just give me the gas card for the letter. Everyone at the dealership knows I'm not selling them my MINI.
