R50/53 MC "S" Logo Revelation!
Boy, do I feel stupid! After having our 2002 MCS for 6 months, I finally noticed that the stylized "S" in MINI Cooper S is designed to look like a curvy road!!! Am I the only one who missed this??? I have read everything on the MCS and never saw any commentary on this neat little touch!
When I was reading reviews of the S when it first came out, they said no one at BMW would reveal what the "S" stood for. There were several answers, but they said it didn't mean "sport". One of the words was a german translation for "fun" and another was that it wasn't an S at all, it was just a stylized road like you said. I wish I still had the article...
What about supercharged?
What about some marking mumbo jumbo.
It is an S, just like an RSX-Type S, or a Corolla S, or a Beetle Turbo S..etc...etc...etc...
What we need now is a Cooper Type R to join the rest of the crowd of Automotive creative nomenclature.

Wow, Dave in Denver - 27,000 miles? That's some mean feat, in a short time.
I just passed 11,000 kilometres in 5 months. That a lousy 6,000 miles or so. And I thought I was MOTORIN'.
Guess not!

Somewhere on the miniusa.com site I saw/read that there was a disagreement between John Cooper and Alec Issigonis about what the S originally stood for. One of them said Sport and one said Special. Anything that BMW says would be apocryphal, or a re-definition at best.
>>>>The "S" stands for "STARFENUGEN" which means FUN in German. Thats the scoop on the "S".
>>
>>actually, the word is Spaß (pronounced "spauss"
While we're correcting each other... You've got the spelling right, but the pronunciation is more like shpahss.

>>I've been thinking about sneaking a Superman "S" somewhere onto my MCS. THAT "S" would mean super, and I think most of us agree the car is super.
It's not a Superman "S", but it's a start
