Not sure if this is the right place...

Run flats...are they mandatory for the MINI? I had someone tell me today that replacements are upwards of $400/tire...is this true?

Is there any particular reason why I couldn't put regular all-season tires (not the run flat version) on regular custom rims?

What are the advantages of the three recommended wheel sizes (15, 16, 17)?

You can run non runflats with no problems and yes run flats are very costly.

I switched to non-runflats on 15" rims and love them. You will need to get either a tire repare kit and small compressor or spare.
But its no big deal.

Though you should be able to find replacement run-flats for closer to $250/corner, many find that non-run-flats are an acceptable, if not preferable, choice.

Non-RFs tend to ride more smoothly (due to a more pliable sidewall), cost much less, and generally can offer better grip/performance (this depends upon which tires you purchase, of course). Non-RFs also weigh less than the RFs.

RFs, however, can offer a piece of mind since many don't carry around a spare in the boot. You might try a can of "fix-a-flat" and pump---keep those with you just in case.

I personally have not looked back since ditching the RFs. The ride is quieter, in addition to all of the other benefits mentioned above.

15"- low cost, low weight, low cool factor
16"- cost increase, weight increase, cool increase
17"- still more cost, still more weight, still more cool

Also, as you increase diameter, you usually go to a lower profile, which enhances handling.
Tire/ wheel choice is a very personal decision, based on your priorities.

With no sapre I like the run-flat idea. My wife drives the car alot and some times at night. The trade off for ride is worth my peace of mine knowing that she can drive home and let me deal with the issue rather then some guy hitch-hiking down the road. And BTW you can get them at Tire rack for well under 2 bills a corner.

More like 400 a pair and not per tire.
You are free to put any tires on any rims just makes sure the rims fit on the MINI.
