Is it just my MINI the one that has had this problem come up? The EML lights up on the center speedometer, then the engine goes on a safe mode, and almost all the power is taken away from my engine. It is frustrating to have a car with 163hp, and when the EML problem shows up, then it feels like driving a donkey with a broken leg. Has anyone else had this problem? has it been fixed? What causes this problem? and what the hell does EML stand for anyways? (my mini manual comes in spanish, so it makes no sense those initials to what the manual says it is) Please somebody help me with these doubts.

Says in the manual:
Engine Electronics Malfunction in the engine electronics. You can continue to drive with reduced engine output or engine speed. Please have the system inspected at your MINI Dealer.

The EML has to do with the Electronic "Drive by Wire" System. You may have a fault in your electronic gas pedal assembly (since there is no cable) or the electronic throttle body.

Better get it fixed so you can enjoy that 163HP! =)

EML = Excuse My Limping

sorry, couldn't resist that one.
EML indicates a fault in the engine management electronics.
Could be any of a number of things.
One quick check: make sure the gas cap is tight!! (Clicks when closing),
used to be a frequent cause of EML warning, although I don't think that cause the car to go into limp home mode.
Better have the car checked out by dealer asap.
On my old subary I had this happen once after the car was stored for 6 months.
A fresh load of good fuel was all that was needed.
Cheers

If your MINI was built in late 2002 to early 2003, have dealer check the engine wiring harness. It took them months to pinpoint this part as the source of my EML.

I bought my MINI March 2003 and has bout 2000 miles on it. Last week, the "Check Engine Soon" light together with the "EML" light came on and the car would not go past 1500 rpm and was unresponsive on 3rd gear ( I have a manual ). MINI had it towed on a flat bed and diagnosis was " Wiring Harness" had to be reinstalled. Unfortunately, it is on back order and delivery date is indefinite. I have been loving my MINI but the joy of knowing that everything is " working" on a new car has been shattered by this experience. I hope this is a one time thing and the 'bug" is fixed ASAP. I've read a couple of other MINI owners who had a similar problems. So, you're not the only one.

What is the build date of your car?
