What security do you have for your MINI?

- Factory Alarm
- After Market Alarm
- The Club (or similar steering wheel lock)
- LoJack
- Other (please explain)

I use The Club, have an after market alarm and have LoJack. My MINI came with LoJack and I am in the process of getting it put into my name and having an inspection scheduled to verify it is still on the car and working.

What about you and your MINI?

The only security my Mini has is an assigned parking spot in a relatively safe (compared to my last apt in downtown LA ) neighborhood and apartment complex.

LoJack and window etching.
People ignore car alarms, and they're always going
off for reasons other than burglary, so I figured that'd
be a waste of money.

though now with my new windshield, I think I'm going to have to
get it re-etched. blast

oh, I also park right next to my window at work,
so that makes me feel better!

I have a firearm as well, but I don't see how it protects the car if I'm not in it

Honestly though, for us I think the best security is a good garage at home and at work, and about a million other Minis in San Francisco making ours blend in when parked on the street

none beyond stock. I live in a pretty rural area with little to no car theft.

The only issue I've had with attack Pomeranians - when I push the button on the remote, instead of getting a reassuring "WHEEP WHEEP", I get a yapping noise...

Me: Visible wheel locks, lighted, secure parking, and the rest I'm not talking about on a public forum... (zap)

i guess the real question is, how much security do you really need?

are you worried about someone breaking into your car, and stealing it off the street? from what i understand (PLEASE correct me if im wrong), MINIs are notoriously difficult to hot-wire, or start in any way whatsoever, if you don't have the factory key. from what i've read, theres a cryptographic code that changes every time you start the car, and replicating it is exceedingly difficult.

Club/Shield/shifter/pedal locking devices are a good nuisance/deterrant, i guess.

the factory alarm will let you know if anyone is tampering with your car in any way. It also has a tilt sensor, which will let you know if someone tries to tow away your MINI (which, from what i understand, is really the only practical way to steal one these days?).

I'm not sure what value aftermarket alarms could add.

lojack seems like it should cover just about any situation. the lojack "early warning" system, which notifies you whenever your car moves without you in it seems very interesting.

are MINIs stolen often? i don't think theres much of a black market for parts (at least not in NYC). you would never be able to take it in for servicing. you would never dare show your face at a rally or something with a stolen mini... i haven't been here for too long, but i don't remember reading a single thread of someone who has had their MINI stolen.

with that being said, i have an appointment next week to have the factory alarm installed in my 06 MCSa. its not so much that i'm worried about theft, but more that if i get smacked by a taxi or something while parked on the street, im hoping to hear the alarm go off immediately, before my fender-friend speeds off.

I guess what im getting at is this... I park in a covered garage and got the factory alarm as a form of protection for my MINI against damage first, and theft second. Am i being incredibly naive?

No but you wasted money on the alarm, IMHO. Alarms not going to stop anybody as nobody pass attention to them. (except for the occasional ancedotal story you will hear ... occasional).

Only one documented case of a MINI being stolen on NAM without a key or towed and never heard the result of that one.

My security is GEICO.

I figure if someone wants it bad enough they are gonna get it and at that point I don't want it back.

When I had my car in at the insurance company for a windshield claim, the adjuster told me they have yet to get a claim for a stolen MINI. Seems the ignition kill built into the key does its job fairly well.

If somebody really wanted your car, they'll find a way. It's nice to live in an area where there are cars much easier to steal than a MINI.

THe ALarm protects your goods inside, and apperantly would pay for itself in reduced insuance rates if I ever decided to get the OEM alarm. So I wouldn't see it as a waste fo money, but its also not a real worry for me ethier, at least for the time being.

statefarm told me that as long as the car has a start cut-off or immobilizer,
there is really no additional savings on alarm systems alone..

can anyone confirm this? (not that it really matters to me).
