Checking tranny fluid

Researched this and couldn't find an answer.

I have a 04MCS automatic, which appears to be leaking tranny fluid (just a few drops at this point).

The dealer said I could check the fluid level by lifting the car, removing the plug and inserting fluid to see if it comes out.

Anyone have a better explanation that that?

They want you to drain it to check it?

I'm interested to know how to check it on the 05 LSD MCSs.

If the LSD is like my 02: On the inboard side (center of the car) of the tranny there are two socket head plugs (I think 8mm maybe 7mm) The bottom one is the drain, the top is the filler. You can see them if you've got the car on jacks and look from the passenger front towards the driver's side. The plugs are obvious, steel socket heads and alum tranny case.

Unscrew the top one and stick your finger in. Fluid should be just below the hole opening. FYI, it's not like the old 90 weight gear oil either. I just replaced mine the other week (after 4+ years and 115K), went very smooth.

Sorry Little bit - don't have the info for the Auto tranny

Thanks Smokey, I'll consult my under car photos to see if I can I dentify it tonight, after I'm done making a stink at the dealer this week I'm going to swap out for Mobil one and do a full oil change, I want ot check the fluid, with the extra work the clutch based LSD puts it through and the fact I am rapidly approaching 50k I'm think I should invest in a little cheap insurance soon. Plus if I switch to Redline then its less drivetrain reistance and a little more power temporarily freed up (I know maybe 1% if I'm lucky, but the concept is nice)
