2006 MCS Backfiring

Hey All,

New MCS with fewer than 1,000 miles on it. I noticed the first day what sounded like an exhaust rattle and minor backfiring. Both seem to be getting slightly, yet progressively worse. I will be taking it to the dealer to address, but I was wondering if anybody else has noticed similar problems on any-year MCSs?

Thanks,

Greg

It's not backfiring but "burble" MINIs run rich, in 05 MINI adjusted the ECU programming to "burble" witht he stock exhaust systems as a "tribute" to the Classic Minis. If you go to a race track you can hear the same pooping on race cars as they shift and the excess gas on those cars (as there is no cat or muffler) lets you occasionally catch a glimpse of flame.

Ah the beautiful sound of a burbling exhaust. My 05 MCS JCW just seems to get more burbly ..... Love it !

By this time I'm amazed they don't go over the 'burble' in the delivery orientation...

We should be able to have MINIs that actually do backfire as a standard feature just like that race car^^^^^^^^

I was back 2 days after I got my car to get some odds and ends (plate holder and spare oil) and decided it was prudent to check on it as I thought the exhaust might have been having some issues, he said it was a normal and so I didn't think much of it ever since, I was suprised that it happens in stock setup, but I sure as never complained about it being too loud, though things seem to have quieted down now.

Yes, this is the normal thing with your MINI.... Turn down the music, open the windows and run through the RPM range...

i tend to hear it when i speed up and am about to shift but then an upcoming light changes (or car in front slows down) and I have to left off the gas.... i definitely hear a burble or even a little backfire... so this is normal, yes?

i like it but haven't quite gotten used to it to feel like it is normal. i had read about it beforehand, though, so i wasn't too surprised.

It's normal, my service guy went over it with be at delivery and again on a mini club outing. Want to hear it really well? Bring home a 10' piece of PVC tubing. You'll have to leave the hatch open and... well... it sounds great. You'll have to accelerate and decelerate the whole way home, and when you get home you'll smell like exhaust - keep the windows open too.

(disclaimer: you can be overcome by exhaust fumes while doing this, or running your car in an enclosed bedroom, or inhaling the rich aroma of freshly baked diesel or... well... you get the picture. Be careful.)

I LOVE the burble, and really want to make it even more burbly with an exhaust (yet another MINI mod to convince my hubby of). In the meantime, I've at least figured out how to burble on cue - LOVE IT!

I love the burble, love it. At first I was a little self conscious in parking lots, having people look at me like "whats wrong with your new car?" now I'll do it whenever i get the chance. They don't know what they are missing.

I love my burble. You know what else I love? Talking about something that has about 9000 threads devoted to it.

I achieved "burble" when I had the Milltek exhaust installed on my 2003 MCS by Detroit Tuned at the Dragon in May...LOVE that sound!

I, too, have learned to burble on cue. I love to cruise into parking lots and just listen. A new exhaust is my next mod, so I can't wait to hear how the burble is "enhanced"!
Now just to decide on the brand!

In SCCA racing all the pooping occurs in the inspection garage after the race.
