Any Surfing MINIs?

Hey guys! Just wondered if there were any surfers out there and how they were handling the transportation of the boards. Racks? Through the roof? Malibu was sunny, 80 degrees and beautiful today; I didn't even need a wetsuit. I was teaching a friend to surf, and surprised my self by fitting both boards in the car! One is 7'2 and one is 7'4.

Surf wax is everywhere - I am so sheepishly irresponsible!

So far i have only carried my bodyboard in the MINI and it fit in the passenger seat with my wetsuit and fins in the rear. When i needed to surf i took my mom's audi.

I plan to pick up a roof rack this coming summer for the surf sessions

And who cares about a little surf wax...think of it as a great-smelling air freshener

I use soft racks. All the boards you see in the photo have been on top of my car. I love my Mini almost as much as I love surfing.

Oh ok, good...Ohio is boring.

Ohio people...please don't kill me.

btw dude...dunno if you saw my post in the interior/exterior mods forum...but your car is amazing. LOVE the wheels. It's without question one of my top 5 favorite MINIs. Hopefully mine will have a similar "look" this coming spring.

Re soft racks:
A: Which brand?
B:No problems with the roof or paint?
C: How is sound/ does it affect the door seal?
D: What about at high speeds?

I live a good 30 minutes from the beach, so it's usually an all day outing, and one of the things i like about keeping the board in the car is that i can go somewhere after surf and not worry about anyone messing with my board. Whenever I use soft racks, I feel like the boards are just waiting to fly off at high speeds and commit suicide on the freeway

And yes... I just gave my board its new winter coat, so the car does smell like rootbeer surf wax. And new car! Great combo.

C: How is sound/ does it affect the door seal. It leaks air. Not enough to drive me crazy. But I don't have to put on real racks or cut holes in the roof for the mini rack.
D: What about at high speeds? No problem. soft racks have changed allot over the years. My boards a clued to the roof. They aren't flying up a foot off the roof on the freeway. Some of my boards cost over a grand. I wouldn't but them up there if I felt they would blow off.

I love the winter for surfing. The colder it gets the less people there are in the water.

destinations are only as boring as the people who are visiting. Ohio is not my first choice for travel. However, being born and raised there, going back is a necessary evil. Therefore, I make my own excitement and fun. Plus, the people are so much nicer than lets say NY or CA. And I have live in both places. Plus, cow tipping does hold some excitment!

Yesterday, I was rubbernecking just east of Topanga to see a nice little set roll in, and as I turned back to face forward, I got a full arm-out-the-window wave from a MINI heading west with a board in his passenger seat. I think it was a dark blue with stripes (don't know the name of the color).

I take my boards in the MINI all the time. I haven't tried the 7'0 yet, but the 6'4 fits fine with plenty of room to spare.

Does everyone use the plastic key when surfing? The MINI plastic key looks like it will last maybe six more months. That think is so flimsy, and no locking key box fits the remote key.

Was it me, was it me? I was driving past Topanga! I fully waved to about five minis but no one waved back:( These pics were taken yesterday, my car is royal grey, and the only one I saw with boards in the passenger seat. I was hoping someone on NAM would comment...

I take along my key with me in an Aquapac keymaster case.

Back on topic... el porto is my usual spot. I usually have a long board or two strapped onto the factory roof rack.

I was heading east, just passing the Charthouse, and I waved back but it was most likely too late for you to see it. Time was around 9ish am, and I drive a PW/B MCS. Topanga looked fun today, by the way.

The only problem I see/have is the hatch back. I wish it was a drop down back like the Cabrio.

you know what mod i have wanted ever since i saw a cabrio hatch that dropped down.

I want to set it up so that the bottom part of the hatch drops down like the cabrio, and the glass/spoiler goes up like normal. That way you could have just the window part open and have the ends of your surfboard hanging out while the rest of the hatch was closed.

I know there is an SUV somewhere that does the same thing. Can't find pics though.

Yaaaayyy! Validation! Billy is less than a month old, so I am still spastic, needless to say. I think your car made me sad, becuase I thought, "so much personality in a car, but no wave." But now I am happy. Also, re the key - I surf in a bikini as long into the winter as possible, usually till early Dec, and I used to tie key onto my top. I'm wondering if mini can make a solid valet key with no electronics? Ada, I looked at the aquapack, but I worry that the key necklace would come right off in winter swell :(
