--- Post 1 ---

I experience this musty smell every morning upon starting of air condition. Send it to the dealer and they have place a odour machine just below the glove box compartment and run the engine at a slightly higher rpm with heater at full blast for 2 hours. Collected the car and drove off and within the next day the smell occurs again and they decided to change out the filter.

--- Post 2 ---

Our dealer told me this morning that all mini's does suffered musty smell coming out from the air condition during initial starting , after they have failed twice to rectified the problem
The first time the remedy was by placing a odour machine just below the glove compartment . Raised the rpm slightly and full blasted the heater for 2 hours but that did not stop the odour smell.
Send in the second time and they have conducted the same old stupid experiment and was a failure. Now the worst is that not only musty smell I get and also after burning smell coming out from the blower.
I am just wondering are they fit to be a mini dealer :impatient Pls advsie and thanking you guys in advance.

I've never heard of an odor machine. Did it have a big nose on it or something?

OMG, and odor machine had me rolling... haven't heard of this in a MINI other than reading it in the other thread... could be a few things though, one thing that comes to mind happened to a friend of mine. Basically it boiled down to the carpet getting wet and molding under the dash section that just happened to be in the same area as the vent that pulls in air for re-circulation. His whole car would smell when he turned the AC on MAX.. once he replaced the carpet, it fixed his issue...

Do keep up posted on the fix, I'm sure it will come around again...

Did this fix it? Every AC odor I've heard of was connected to the filter. Normally, it's dirty socks smell though.

Do you run the AC on recirculate often? I've heard of that being the cause of AC stinkiness and I run it mostly with outside air as a result (and so far so good).

We have an '02 with over 86,000 miles on the clock, and we have NEVER had a problem with oders. Now I'm not saying it won't happen ... you know after it is broken in. Who knows. The only oder I can detect now is that of rotting service.

2006 MCS smells like nothing during starting and normal ops. When I start the A/C I sometimes get a pleasant rainy smell for a few seconds then nothing. To keep my system as dry and cootie-free as possible, I never run it on recirculate. Good luck with everything, hope they find the problem.

Only time I smell anything is when I drive past a skunk and I'm not on re-circulate. All you should smell is that new car smell which is not musty. If you had an older car I'd say check the air filter, even still might be a good idea.

musty = BAD

Sounds like the stealer...errr...dealer is trying to justify a problem they don't want to fix or know how to fix.

you have something in your ductwork somewhere.

the machine they put in your car was an ozone generator. ask if they replaced your air filter or not (I would hope they tried that) if they have and the ozone generator does not work, ask for them to do a chemical treatment on the ductork. it involves spraying in a chemical deodorizer right in the vents.

Wow thanks for the quick respond, I am a non smoker and one wants smokes in there. The carpet is always dry and never run on circulate the air.
I had this before on my the other car ( Japanse car ) with the same odour and was removed by a fresh spray of chemical on the blower and filter changed . Unfortunately our dealer sticks to BMW recommendations which its sucks and now they are waiting another cleaning machine to do the job and that means no fresh air till..............

you can get a kit and do it yourself.

its not hard, just make sure you wear a dust mask or respierator and rubber gloves when doing it, the stuff's nasty.

Is this a new car or used? If used, did you check to make sure it wasn't a water damaged one?

Actually, that is "The Edge", I am just Edge. Also, his name is fake... mine is at least based upon my real name.

Strange coffee-like odor...

Hmmm... the only odor I've ever had in my 2006 MCS is a strange coffee-like odor...

Of course, that could be related to the "Venti" Starbucks that spilled all over my passenger carpeting...

Seriously, this doesn't sound normal to me. I had something similar in a previous car. Changing the interior air filter solved my problem...

Mini had some bad experiences chemical cleaning the vents and interiors on some cars (owners sensitive to chemicals) but it sounds like your car's venting or carpeting needs a cleaning with something other than ozone.

Mine smells like a "car", actually a pretty new-ish car, nothing musty or old-socky about it. 2 other non-new Minis I've been in were the same. Kind of blows the "they all do that" theory.

My '03 smells like whatever discretion/indiscretion I exercised the last time I was in the vehicle. So if I wear great purfume, that's what my car smells like. If I cannot find the dog's chewey stick, my car smells of soggy rawhide the following day. And if I leave a half-eaten bag of Doritos in the door pocket... you get the idea.

Febreeze

My last vehicle had the same problem, changed the cabin filter but no change in mustiness. I set the climate control to fresh air and set the fan on high and sprayed Febreeze into the air intake at the base of the windshield. Most car wash/detail shops have similar solutions. If you park your car outside I'd also check to see if leaves & debris migh be falling into the cowl vents at the base of your windshield. If so, this might be a source of moisture in your system.
