R50/53 Winter Car?
Winter Car?
With snow rearing its ugly head as winter approaches apace I was wondering how many forumites have an alternate lousy weather vehicle to drive?
I know that Minis are fine in the snow, especially if you get a dedicated set of winter tires, but we get a lot of salt and sand on the roads up here and I've resolved to keep my baby as far away from that as possible for as long as possible. Of course I'm getting a lot of grief from my wife for electing to purchase a "toy" instead of a vehicle, but I think part of that is just jealousy.

If I could afford a winter beater and keep the MINI garaged I would. I hear you about the salt, and take every chance I get to wash the MINI in the winter. But, it really does well as a daily driver, so my MINI sees lots of snow!
I have a full size Chevy pickup. I drive it all year, not just in the crappy weather. It is my daily driver, and at 20.58 MPG it is not too bad at all for a 5.3L V8.
We have a 2003 Land rover Discovery. Its perfect for the snow. Lots of ground clearance, full time 4WD, high and low range. The only con is that it has the third seat package. That means no adjustable air suspension, and no locking diffs.
i am eyeing one for the winter as ive driven the mini through 3 winters now and heading into the 4th.... im hoping to end it this winter or in the spring so i no longer have to drive my lowred mini in dreadful winter...
i just try to wash it as much as possible... and i wax it mid winter (believe me when i say applying zaino in the dead of winter is just HARD)

wat do you guys think of the new CRV? was at the dealer yesterday
to pickup my a/s floor mats for my civic and parked next to it.
looked pretty nice... but only 23/28mpg, so no benefit over my Legacy.

Same here. I got my winter tires a few days ago from Tire rack (only took a day to get here
)
Then I decided to buy another set of MINI wheels specifically for the winter off of ebay. My spring/summer/fall wheels are my X-lites and my winter wheels will be the 5-spoke wheels (sorry, I don't know the actual name
)
So I'm all set for winter.

Yep, same here. I LOVE to drive him in the snow. BUT, around here, they insist on dumping a TON of salt on the roads.
If I could afford a winter car, I would buy one. Only take out Dobby in fresh snow that hasn't been mucked up yet.

Mi MINI is my winter car and summer car, too. It is kept in the garage, but I drive it daily. It likes the snow! I don't have room for a separate winter car. Plus, I don't like driving anything else except my MINI.
97 subaru outback sport. Really was a winter vehicle to my old miata, ran the MINI for the most of last winter. Unless it was really bad out.... most likely do the same now.
good for home depot as well!

we have 2 winter/daily driver cars....my wife drives and LOVES her 2004 Tacoma extra cab, and I enjoy my 2006 Impreza Sport Wagon. Short on power, but all wheel drive, and it was wicked cheap with great financing incentives through Subaru during the time I bought. The MINI sits even if the slightest hint of rain, it is purely a fair weather/toy car for me and my wife.
