Help! Roaring at higher speeds

I have a MCS. When I hit higher speeds (speeds I'm too embarrassed to say on the forums), I get a roaring sound that seems to be coming from the top of the windshield. Has anybody else experienced this? There are no water leaks in the car when it rains, so I'm stumped.

I get it too, and it's intermittent. Only happens sometimes, usually in triple digits on the speedo. Used to happen at 70. At least now it only happens at a higher zip. Kind of a howl coming from the front center, in the map light area. I think it's a vibration caused by air getting in somewhere.

I get that from the tires, not the windshield (those KDWs are loud).

It very well could be the seal, but if you have to go over the speed limit to make the sound good luck getting Mini to reproduce it in order to fix it under warranty (I had an whistling issue in an e46 over 60 mph and BMW wouldn't take it to speed in order to test & fix it )

If I did want to take it to the dealer, I'd be the one driving. They already told me that. The service guy would be in for a RIDE!

We've done drives with techs and mechanics - it certainly can help to identify a sound or problem when they say they cannot reproduce it (even then, oy, don't ask), but in my case with the whistling 3 series it was going to be a matter of them needing to be able to work on it and check it repeatedly and it seemed to be an uphill battle since they stated they would not be able to due to the speed. I decided that the sound was harmless and didn't fix it since they always managed to break something when trying to fix something else anyway - in the long run I was right, the whistling at 60-70 was only annoying.

I think I know the sound you guys are describing. Happened to me this weekend three or four times in a 760-mile trip. I heard a shrill buzz while going about 70+ mph. It was as if the wind were coming thru the air intake on the hood and slamming into the roofline. Very strange indeed and a little unsettling on a new car.

I know some who would like to strap their MA or SA to the roof for just such a ride!

I'm considering a needle thin application of clear silicone along the windshield trim. Smoosh it up in there, and remove the excess.

Mine sounds like a train whistle at high speeds. I tracked mine down to the sunroof. Apparently the seal deforms under certain conditions. No biggie, IMO.

I don't have the sunroof, and I drove thru a heavy thunderstorm last weekend w/o any evidence of leaks. Guess it's just a goofy quirk of the Mini. I can live with it so long as it's not a mechanical problem.

Yeah, this is definitely a far more accurate description of the sound, but like Sissy said, I don't have the sunroof. I might try the silicone seal and see how that works.

I'm so happy to know I'm not the only one. It's definitely intermittent though. Anywhere between 70 and 100 mph.

The aerodynamics, or lack there of, may have something to do with this.

Let us know how the silicon seal works. My Mini is still in the break-in period. :impatient Am trying to keep the speed down below 70..... It's been hard keeping the rpm's and speed down. The car really wants to run. Maybe this train whistle is the computer's way of telling us to slow down.

Just what I needed...a car with a conscience!

I'll definitely keep you posted on the silicone seal. While it's rare that I get up to those speeds, it's super annoying. :impatient

you are not the only one. train whistle is an apt description. it is definately polyphonic and mid-low pitch. higher than 70 mph, tho, by at least 30...

This usually occurs when the A/C recirculate is turned on.

Actually, this is an undocumented feature. When you drive your MINI spiritedly, you make a sound.....a sort of "wheeeee!!". Well, your MINI enjoys motoring as much as you do, and when you drive with enough vigor to pin your MINI's fun meter, it too makes a sound!

That makes perfect sense. Problem solved!

In my car there is usually a sound of the tightened (via a CG-Lock) seatbelt being pressed on by the passengers. Its odd...but not very noticable above other car noises.

You'll have to name your Mini - "Kit."
