What do you do when you park on a slope?

Does anyone shift to first gear or reverse when parking on a slope?

I always park with tranny in 1st and parking brake set. When I park on a slope, I also cut the wheels to one side or the other. Not too many hills in Savannah, though.

I always park in first gear with the e-brake on. If I'm on a hill I turn the wheels so it would roll into the curb.

I always use the ebrake, put it in 1st gear, and turn the wheels so if it moves, it moves into the curb, as Crashton said.

I leave it in neutral and pull the parking brake up about 1/4 of the way up and just hope for the best.

Just kidding. . . I put wheel chocks behind each and every wheel and use my tow eye to attach a chain to the nearest parking meter or telephone pole.

I can see it now. You put all the chocks behind the wheel, step back to admire your work, then you realize when your MINI starts rolling forward down the hill that you should have put the chocks in front of the wheels.

Parking on a hill. I put it in 2nd. My friend from High school long ago had a discussion that 2nd gear would be better than 1st.

I also pull the handbrake hard so that it snaps the wire and then your ****** for the whole evening.

Parking brake set, shifter in high gear (most resistence to rolling). If I'm pointed down hill, the wheel's are turned into the curb. If the nose is uphill, the wheels are turned away from the curb (if it rolls, the tires catch the curb). In San Francisco, you can be fined for parking improperly on a hill.

this is a change of pace, parking over driving. haha

1st gear, parking brake nice and tight tilt wheels so you roll into a curb. dont forget to roll up your windows and lock it too

I'm with Yucca - except I leave it in neutral. Heck, I'm in Illinois....the only thing that will move it would be a farm animal loose from it's owner - oh, and the wife just yelled over and says maybe a gust of wind.

I have my wife stand behind it and hold it in place. j/k

Same as all above, first gear, parking brake and wheels towards curb.

Wouldn't reverse or low gear have more resistance to rolling than high gear?

Why not just leave it in neutral and let it rest on the SUV in front/behind it?

No, really, I set the e-brake and put it in whatever gear I am going to want to be in when I leave. I realize that it might not be the absolutly best, but I am a little lazy that way.

Here in sunny Los Angeles, we actually have laws that force us to turn our wheels into the curb. Unfortunately, I learned this one the hard way. Yearss ago, I got some yukky $28 parking ticket once for not "curbing" my wheels, when I had parked on a street that had a slight incline. Nevermind that the incline was about 100 feet behind my car, and I was parked on flat ground. ARGH....darn revenue takers. That's what i get for parking in Hollywood.

As to my procedure for parking ona a grade is, shift into reverse, apply the e-brake as lightly as a I can. On flat ground, I am reverse or 1st gear only, no e-brake, as per the instructors @ the BMW High Performance Driving School.

I've trained my Dog to push the break peddle down while we're parked on a hill. It took some practice on my driveway, but sure beats the wear and tear on the clutch and tranny.

I don't think it would be better. 1st should provide greater resistance to rolling.

^ +1. you can almost roll a car in 2nd gear... use 1st or reverse. not 2nd.

I learned to drive a stick in Pittsburgh, where hills abound.
I always put it in 1st, engage the ebrake, and cut the wheels.
Ya never know what'd happen if ya didn't....and I'd hate to find out.

What I thought. Thanks for proving me not crazy. Of course, there being almost no hills in Sacramento, I'm mostly in neutral with the e-brake.
