Service Engine Soon

Hi all....I have a question I have a 05 base mini with 24,000+ miles on it. The last two days the service engine soon light has been on and it will not turn off. The car doesn't seem to be running any different than normal. Is this just a sign to go in and get my 25,000 oil change? Or should I be worried that the car is going to blow up or something???
Thanks

You can do a few things here:

1. Go to your local Pep Boys or other Auto parts store and ask them to read the code your car is making.
2. Call your local MINI Dealer and ask them to see what code your car created.
3. Ignore it and if its a minor issue the light will go out after 4-5 key cycles (car on, car off).
4. I have a small code reader that I carry around and read my car's codes and use NAM and the internet to determine if the car needs service.

Or you could look in your manual. It states what you should do, but I won't look it up for you. ;-)

Autozone can pull the code for you as well (no charge) if you do not have a Pep Boys local.

our MINI's are notorious for throwing error codes some times.
as above, i recommend you get the code pulled at your car shop.

also, you can buy scanners for like $70... i recommend you have
one when you own MINI's and BMW's and other euro's as they
seem to pop SES's often.

Just as a shot in the dark, try tightening your gas cap.

Definitely try the gas cap trick, has helped me once. The second time a year later the gas cap trick didn't, I had been using generic gas at a cheap place, switched to brand name gas, light went out. Dunno if the gas, gas cap, chance, resolved this...

IIRC the early models cars don't have it but my 2005 have a gas cap light.

My SES light came up recently When I got home, I checked the cap and it was secure. I hope it's nothing major. With my work schedule, the only time my dealer can fit me in is in two weeks

I have an 05' S,loaded except NAV and CVT,and mine is counting down(the mileage)to the next service, which should be @ 26k miles.I'm currently at 24,885,so maybe your computer thinks you need an oil change according to the way the car is being driven.I've been told that computers know when hard driven cars need service sooner than normally driven cars, but I don't know for a fact if computers are THAT smart!

The SES light will not come on for Schedule Maintenance, that what the counter is for.

Have the code checked and see what it is for. Probably an O2 sensor, known to go bad.

Interesting, the SES light went off today . So, does that mean a fault code is still in the memory?

Anyways, I just called my dealer about it and I'm keeping my appointment for next Friday. I also asked about the software upgrade.

the SES light on this car will play tricks with you on
occassion. i too recommend you keep your appointment
to get it checked out. it will retain the dtc.

btw, which version does the dealer have nowadays? v43? v44/

I have no idea but I'll ask on Friday. The service department dude told me over the phone that the latest version addresses the ethanol issues and my rough idle on start up.

I just hope the latest version doesn't kill the exhaust pop. If it makes it louder then all the better.
