This could take care of both issues:

http://www.tigerlight.net/TigerLightTab/FAQ.php

FWIW, I'd mount a Maglite right between the seat and door. An easy reach, but not in the way. It's no good to you if you can't get to it.

A conversation between myself and a Wal-Mart employee (that'll teach me to shop there...):

Me: "Hi, I'm looking for pepper spray, and my friend told me it's kept behind the counter somewhere."
Wal-Mart employee: "Pepper spray...ya mean like, ta cook wit?"
Me: "No, pepper spray, like you grab my arm to mug me and I shoot you in the face with it."
Wal-Mart employee: "Oh, pepper spray. Ya mean like, mace?"

.....

Wow this thread took off in many directions! Planeguy, are you saying that someone broke into your house?? Thats awful, but indeed strange that the notebook was the only thing taken .. Unless it was an apple notebook, then that is precious enough!

Anyway, I decided i'm going to keep my maglite in my driver door pocket with microfiber towels to stop any rattling. Also, I really want to buy a surefire just for carrying around (hard to carry around a 4D maglite everywhere) at night but the price is keeping me back . I don't think I'm paranoid enough to carry around pepper spray/mace and there is always that danger with shooting yourself with it. Thanks for all the posts gentlemen, it truly was an interesting read ...

About that guy fantasizing thing ... yeah it may be true to an extent but like all fantasies, they are most likely never to happen exactly the way you fantasize. Anyone with a reasonable amount of logic will not try to make fantasies like these come true. I repeat many of the posters when I say ... preparedness!

It must be kinda scary where you live.

What kind of message does this send to all the women out there?

That they shouldn't expect to be rescued by some knight and must rely on themselves? I mean if it is scary, wouldn't deceiving them send the wrong message? But most women already know they are more likely than us guys to have something that somebody else wants, so are more cautious. I know I'd prefer a SO to pack a "great equalizer."

The best place for a defensive weapon is obviously on your person and not in your car. Contrary to the movies, no handgun caliber is guaranteed to be as rapidly effective as you'd like--people don't just fall down when shot, and you wouldn't be shooting at all unless you were in immediate, mortal danger. Sure it would be pretty easy to inflict a mortal wound, but chances are pretty good they will still be able to kill you before they die if you are dumb enough to stand your ground firing. A handgun is best considered only as a last-ditch defensive tool that buys you additional time to run, which is what any reasonable person would consider first in a life-threatening situation. So unless you are just going to walk around everywhere carrying a shotgun...

Given that context, being prepared to blind/disorient someone (chows, I'm frankly surprised you haven't yet brought up Daniel Stern since the Mag85 I mentioned is bright as a 9004 headlight on high) with a flashlight is not unreasonable because it would also buy you time to run, and is less likely to make them really mad than shooting them. And anybody who doesn't think a Maglite is a deadly weapon should just ask Malice Green.

what disease is that, Paranoia spurred by profit-hungry media outlets who know fear sells?

(sorry for the bump was searching some threads and found this hysterical)

I CCW a Springfield XD9 SC and have a small XML Light attached to the under rail...

I would say that a flashlight as a weapon will get you dead fast. If you are in a situation that calls for self defense then you better be ready to defend your LIFE! Not wave a flashlight at a person, or give a person a fast swing over the head. This will land you in Jail.

Find a smaller compact light for "Lighting your way" and get the proper training and tools for saving your life.

Why does it matter? It's my constitutional right to have the means to self defense. Nobody questions your right to post on this forum do they?

Profit hungry media outlets? Like the ones that are touting inanimate objects as "Assualt riles!!" Funny stuff! Perhaps the sheeple need to stop watching movies.

I honestly can't believe some of you don't think having some, even limited, means of self defense is important.

Do you have wives, daughters, children? One of the things taught to every girl when I was in college was: carry mace at all times, don't walk alone at night, and RUN. And this was in a small, midwestern town.

I don't carry a handgun, because I have two small children who might someday accidentally get hold of it. But I do carry a large maglight. Think of it this way. I'm a medium sized guy. If the other guy is a big guy, unarmed, and is determined to pummel me, at least I have a big stick to help even the odds somewhat.

My wife carries pepper spray in her purse, for the same reason.

And for those who don't think a maglight is an effective weapon, watch how police hold them. perfect position for a downward strike.

Funny storytime:
I had a very scary, but ultimately hilarious, encounter with two policemen in my home at 1 am several years ago. My front door was accidentally left ajar, and the wind blew it open. A neighbor saw the open door, and dark house, called 911, and a patrol came to the house. When they knocked, my wife and I did not hear it (we were....busy) but the police heard what they THOUGHT might be a rape happening upstairs. So they ran upstairs and burst through the bedroom door, guns drawn and maglights over shoulders. Needless to say, we were spotlighted in a very compromising position. Then I had to prove I was actually her husband, lived there, and was not assaulting her in any way....

but the point is, the maglights were right there the whole time, even after the guns were put away....

After scanning thru this thread, I've found it embarrassing to have a cheap hand-crank flashlight in my MCS

i've been in a situation, in nyc, four guys vs. me on an empty street, and you know what? i'm damn glad i wasn't carrying a deadly weapon, because if i had been, there's a good chance that someone, me or one of them, would have died that night.

instead, i took a beating, and the only long term consequence was that i have a story that establishes my credibility in discussions like this. was i lucky that things turned out so well? sure. but if i'd had a gun on me, the chances that i would have had such a lucky outcome go way down.

for a woman, this is a different story. women have more to fear from these situations than we men do.

so why the hell do so many men carry deadly weapons?
oh dont feel bad at all, i did that once, then i started boxing and i dont like the take a beating option
and my mum hates me carrying a knife or soemthing cause they could always pull out a bigger knife or even worse a gun

Great story yellowminis !!

About magflashlights as weapons......these are traditional police accessories and for good reason....but did you read the story of what is going on in L.A.:

an amazing example of the ACLU in action.....I can picture an ACLU attourney walking along a street in LA and is getting mugged and a policeman comes on the scene and threatens the mugger with his cute AAAbatterysized flashlight....frankly, I'd rather have a stong police presence and the ability for the police to protect themselves as well

Bluestone, you are a statistic waiting to happen.
"I'd rather take a beating than harm someone else". Well guess what; you'll get your wish. Why don't you grow a spine and decide your own fate?
Anyone tries to give me a beating will end up in intensive care, or the coroner's "special place". My life is more important than any lowlife mugger's.

The worst part was after the two cops left, they went outside and VERY loudly described in pretty good detail what they each saw.

Bluestone-
would you stand by watching your wife/gf/daughter get raped? Can you REALLY imagine THAT???

What if they killed her afterwards? Could you LIVE with THAT? Your whole life knowing you'd stood by and let it happen? You didn't do anything?

How about-now imagine you have kids. You'd rather die than defend yourself. OK. Fine. Now they don't have a daddy anymore. You going to ruin that generation and probably the next, because you didn't do anything? Or even TRY??? To prove a POINT???

Yeah, I could have gone to college and become a doctor. But Daddy wanted to be a victim. Now mommy works really hard to pay the rent and doesn't get to spend much time with us. We need new shoes-maybe mommy can get a few more tips next week. To sacrifice himself so that he'd have credibility. Yeah right.

This is the most un-Mini-like thread I've ever read.
But I did enjoy funny story time! That was Mini-like.
