Ahh but Eric ... think Crocodile Dundee when the street thugs pulled out a Buck Knife to mug him and he pulls out his 14" Bowie. Now THAT was a good movie scene

I just prefer my trunkmonkey. Once you get a trunkmonkey you don't have to worry about thugs at red light!!!

If it is so dark you can't see where to shoot without the light, how are you going to blind them since you can't see them without a flashlight? Additionally, if the situation has degenerated to that point, once you turn on your flashlight, the other person will know EXACTLY where to shoot to hit you.

However, I see your point about picking up the casings-but if you use a revolver, you don't have to worry about those pesky casings.

If you carry a gun, a knife, or even a tire thumper and are not licensed to carry a concealed weapon and you are you are stopped by the police for any reason you can have a serious legal problem as all of them are weapons. Most states have laws regarding the carrying of weapons and in most states the law frowns quite seriously on open carry in vehicles.

I know of now laws, either state or federal, regarding open carry of a flashlight. If anyone does, please correct me.

You use get into a beef and you defend yourself with a flashlight, which is clearly a tool for which you have potential use, and your legal problem is still considerable, but of far less clear cut a nature than if you had defended yourself with a gun, knife, club, or to keep Chows happy in his EverythingCanBeTrumped world, a freaking neutron bomb.

As far as defending yourself with a flashlight against someone with a gun, somewhere Darwin is giggling in his grave. You don't take a knife to a gunfight. Unless you're really, really skilled with a knife.

I keep a Mag 6D in my boot. It's there more for show and those occasional power outages at the dorms but it definitely would serve as a serious beating stick. I suggest the Xenon upgrade. Blind 'em, then smack 'em.

cold aspiration, I am not sure where you live, but if you are in VA, GA, FL, NC, or other states that issue CWP's than get one of those and a nice firearm and just carry it with you. That is what we did when we lived in FL

a maglite is always a good companion. drive thru bushwick brooklyn at 3 am and you will understand why you need one in the car. i know what your sayin, "what are you doin there at 3am?" well, i used to live in that area and would be gettin home from work around then. i would love to have a firearm in the mini but, the cops would throw my white *** in jail faster than you could say police brutality. so, the mag will have to do.
i keep mine velcro'd to the door stash spot. fits perfect and makes no noise.

I keep a 4D cell Maglight next to my HAZMAT response book, a microfiber and CB if I'll be out of cell phone range in the driver side door pocket, the microfiber is as much for detailing as it is rattle prevention. I also keep 2 chem sticks in my boot cubbie. I also like to carry a cheap Minimag sized LED light ($20 target 5 white and 1 red LED), or my Minimaglight (2AA) on my person or in the glove box those are for in car or engine work, the 4D cell maglight is for approaching a broken down car, accident, break the window in flood/river emergency or power outage I do not carry it in the capacity of a weapon, though people usually do take a step or two back, esp. when they see it on my belt. And I have had the training in handling accidents and other emergencies until law enforcement and resuce teams arrive, and I only stop and help when it is safe to do so, many times though it is safer just to call 911 and let fully equipped units respond. I also tend to keep a tool set in the boot, as ahabit from driving a car that I could legitametly need to fix in a parking lot before it would start.

I like the LEDs enough to consider doing a conversion on my maglight, if I like it on 1 of me 2AA ones I might do it on the 4D, but I'm not sure cause I know the 4D is a light I can trust regardless of whether or not its the brightest thing out there.

Verbal Judo is the best weapon out there and it sure as heck is easy to conceal, I do not reccomend putting yourself in situation where you are at risk, if you feel threatened call your police department immeadeatly that's why they're there, for your safety.

Be safe out there, carrying a flashlight is a wise move, but it should not be carried as protection from criminals.

im in no way sayin chicago is a fairy town. ive been thru chicago. i know how bad it can get but, for us that live in new york and are not rich or blessed with cheap rent in a good area...a weapon is a must. i have had guns put in my face over a book bag (no joke) in the middle of the afternoon so there are war zones in new york. the idea of carrying a weapon with no deer to hunt makes me sick BUT, the only language a city thug understands and respects is click, click, boom. sad but true. with that being said, all i can say is verbal judo doesnt work so well with a gun in your mouth.

I know what you're sayin' I used to live in the NYC suburbs and I've been in many other areas where things are, uhh I'll use the phrase, less than safe.

There are neighborhoods I avoid because of those crime issues, there are neighborhoods where I won't stop at night, I slow and wait for the light to turn, gunfire in the streets is normal and only makes the news when someone is caught in the crossfire. But if a gun is in my mouth, the can have my wallet keys etc. I'm not about to pull another fun on them and test their trigger discipline.

Also I don't want anyone getting weird looks from a guy on the street, getting out of their car beat the snot out of a local then pointing back to this thread and geting us held liable.

99% of the time you can talk your way out of things, you may have to sacrifice some possesions and dignity but you can get out with your life. And that flashight with a gun in your mouth is only increasing tensions and the likely hood of the other guy (or gal) pulling the trigger.

It seems there is a lot oyu alreaqdy know and practice about protecting yourself on the street, which is important but not something I feel discussing on a public forum.

Uh, DaveTinNY, if you're getting into scrapes with guys that have concertina wire fortifications, you may just want to move on.

It's the times that you're NOT able to conceal your Verbal Judo that you may need the mag light!

Poor guy, all he wanted was suggestions on where to put his flashlight! As usual, what he ends up with is an earfull from the "Judgement Gospel Singers"

I think the addage everyone wants to use is:
It's better to have and not need than need and not have.

I doubt there is any law against having a flashlight, concealed or not. However, it can be used as a "dangerous weapon", which is in probably every state law. I'm not going to quote URLs but you can easily google for cases of people charged with assault & battery with a flashlight.

I don't know where it is written (and it might be Urban Legend), but I have heard that in California,if you use a 6D-cell is considered a deadly weapon when used for striking. Striking with a 4D-cell is assault . . 6D-cell is assault with a deadly weapon.

If you have questions about the legality of carrying any kind of defensive device, check out www.packing.org . While it is primarily firearm oriented, they do have helpful info on knives and other such goodies.
Remember: the only person responsible for your safety is YOU!

yeah someone mentioned a baton...my dad (cop in DC) broke his baton on someone then grabbed for his trusty maglite. he has quite a few stories about cracked skulls. i suppose if you are patroling the streets of DC, a maglite is a good idea...

back to the original question, i can try to put my 4cell maglite in my parcel shelf and see how it fits. the shelf is really worth the investment since there's not tooo much storage space in the MINI. i have my audio adapter installed in it too.

what about in the boot? it wouldnt be within hand's reach but it would be out of the way. i usually use little bungees to secure things back there

Yeah, you're right, at that point it'd be best to hand over 'dem keys.

NAM administrator - Where are you? I was not allowed to discuss global warming because NAM does not allow political discussions but I guess it is OK to discuss beatings and skull bashing by WT MINI owners.
