(btw, this is my favorite thread so far on NAM)
Just make sure that you secure that flashlight wherever it is you decide to put it. I have seen what happens in an accident if they are not. Any size D cell flashlight makes a destructive missile when it is flying around inside a car or truck.

With regards to the whole defense with a flashlight issue...where do you think you might possibly be using it as a weapon?
If you are in your car, it will be difficult to get the leverage to make the flashlight a potent weapon (try swinging a baseball bat while sitting down in an enclosed space). And besides...if you are in your car why not drive off?
If you are outside of your car, you have either stepped out to confront a threat (again, why not just drive off?) or have not yet entered the vehicle, in which case you would not have had the chance to grab the flashlight in the first place.
If you are that concerned about your safety, carry pepper spray/mace, or get a concealed-carry license and a pistol. A flashlight won't do you much good because you can't use it effectively in the confined space of a vehicle, and if you are in a position where you have the time to grab it and egress, you should have enough time to drive off. If the vehicle is immobilized...a tire iron or crow bar can be kept in the boot and is far more effective.

I don't see how the word "weapon" or "beating stick" has been taken out of context ...
Lets say, for example. just for kicks, he asked for a good place to stash a rope with a noose in it because he knew he could use it for other purposes (like suicide).
Do you think maybe, in an open forum it might be a better idea to advise him NOT to carry a rope (although he could use it to tow his car and clearly it has other uses than committing suicide?)
IMO, if he said where can I store a maglight and have easy access, he would have gotten a simple answer. By interjecting HOW he was going to use the maglight, he get a more complex answer because it becomes an issue ... not political. There are no politics involved here. Common sense maybe, but no politics.
Your right on this one Chows, I feel if the world is so scary out there, stay home. As for the Euro Shelf, I wonder if it would give me the room I need to mount my BearTracker receiver now that's what scares me, not knowing where the PoPo is, they seem to swoop out of nowhere & end up right behind me with lights flashing & all. Whats up with that.

Just curious...now that Michigan has passed the "need not retreat" law, does this apply if I'm in my Mini?
you could always check out police/military supply companies. I belive there is a bracket with a charger component that you can mount next to your right leg (assuming you are in the drivers seat) on the center console. the flash light slides into the bracket. I would recommend geting a pistol and a concealed carry license if you are worried about safety though in a large city though.

I don't know if someone has already mentioned this (only skimmed the thread), but taser guns are completely legal to carry in CA. I don't know where you are located, but you might check the laws in your area about taser guns. I'm a big advocate of these as alternates to firearms :D Also, it's a lot less bloody than having to beat someone with a Maglite :D
I put a stainless steel machine-gun mount on the bonnet. It's about 30" high, spreads about 44" across for the tripod, just touching the racing stripes. It weights about 54 pounds (24.5 kg). it holds my flashlight very well. I just have to remember to open the sunroof before I stand up to use it.

With that said perhaps the title of the thread should not say maglite/weapon
Oh......and I carry my 6D maglite tucked nicely between the drivers door and the seat rail, with the big end facing fwd so that I can open the door with the left and grab the big end with the right hand so that my hand is already on the button to light
This is the state of people in America? Carrying guns, knives and other weapons in their car? WTF? Where does it stop?
I lived in L.A. for 26 years-not that long ago, by the way- and I NEVER carried a weapon. When I NEED/HAVE to carry a weapon in my car to live in the U.S. then we have much bigger problems as a society than foreign terrorists.
IMO many of these posts are absolutely ridiculous. If our society is as people describe it in these posts-incredibly violent, people snapping and going after other people all the time without any provocation, people needing to carry a gun with them in Florida- then what the hell good is a maglite going to do? Hey remember some guy put a gun in the guy's face over a backpack. What good would the flashlight have done?
I'm all for someone being able to defend themselves, but the line of reasoning discussed in these posts doesn't even seem rational.

the machine gun rack is also available in olive drab and desert cammo. or dessert cammo. depends on your flashlight.
or, I think you can get this one with checkers or a union jack. It's a JCW option on '07 models, rumors say... http://www.plattmounts.com/swing.html

again, nobody is talking about carrying guns an knives
Where does it stop you ask? it stops where the law says it does....a flashlight. and its not about need its about the choice.....you chose not, I choose to....and neither yours or my choice affects you or I......until you start cramming more laws down my throat.....ironicly because YOU don't feel safe and thats not because someone beat you with a maglite
