Going in Reverse

Hey everyone, I have a question about the reverse gear in my MC. So far in about a week's worth of ownership, I have not fully engaged the clutch when going in reverse. I just release the clutch pedal partially and give gas until the car starst to move, then I floor the clutch pedal and let the momentum carry it until I need to move again. I tried to fully release the clutch while going in reverse but it just goes so freaking fast that i'm afraid a little kid or somethign is going to jump out any second. I always thought that reverse and 1st gear were the same thing except opposite directions. Am I wrong in this assumption? Is it bad for the clutch to be doing what i'm doing? what about going forward? Thanks in advance, i Love NAM btw.

Oh and another cool thing I realized is that when in 5th gear, the gear shift doesn't allow me to go straight down into Reverse,. A very cool safety feature in my opinion. just broke 400 miles!

First, Congrats on your new MINI!! I hope you enjoy yours as much as I have mine. Second, I used to do the same thing. The MIni has so much get up and go that it sometimes scared me a bit when backing up in a parking lot. It probably wasn't the best for the clutch but I was cautious. I'm finally catching onto it though and doing better with the clutch. Just take your time and you'll be purring in reverse without breaking into a sweat.

Yeah, it is quite zippier in reverse than you expect. It's probably so you can finish the race backwards ala "Dukes of Hazard"!

I myself can't stay in reverse the whole way when backing into my driveway because the thing gets going so darn fast. As long as you aren't riding the clutch (which will cause premature wear) you should be fine. Just gauge how much rear boost you need, and depress the clutch when you need to. Just don't feather it.

HAHA, sorry, I just find that funny. The "problem" is actually the gearing, as my last car had 3X the HP as my MCS and it was more stable (read:slower) in reverse than the MINI.......

Just a side note about going in reverse, if you can take a look at the speedo, it reads in reverse
