R50/53 MINI Illegal to drive
This was in todays paper:
Albany, New York:
An amendment attached to a highway spending bill passed by the New York State Assembly today bans the Mini Cooper from New York state highways. State assemblyman Robert Smolaski (R 39th district) was quoted today “the era of small car is over in New York. These cars are too small and have become a hazard to the majority of vehicles on our roads.” The new law is a result of and incident involving his 2003 Cadillac Escalade and a yellow Mini Cooper with a happy face in the rear window on the New York State Thruway near Buffalo.
The new law bans the sale or use of the Mini on all New York State roads. All mini dealers have been closed and if a Mini is spotted on the road the car will be impounded and the driver jailed. The law also includes out of state drivers.
The new law is scheduled to take effect on April 1, 2003.

>>if they do that, which i'm having a hard time believing, they better ban any running Yugo, motorcycles, Geo Metro's and a boat load of other small cars. sounds pretty fishy to me.

Hum - and what paper was this in so that we can all see the article?
I highly doubt that they (meaning officials in NY) can make this happen overnight - if at all

How do they ban a car form only one state? I can see admissions, but becuase it is too small? I think the real danger is all those jerk-off SUV drivers. The majority of them are women that don't want to drive a mini van (no offense). They should make separate roads for semi-trucks and suvs
I hear that they have elected to discourage MINIs on the New York State Thruway by never fixing the thruway.
I will be in Buffalo next weekend so I will let you all know if I get escorted from the state.

It´s a good one, it did fooled me.
You want to know really sad facts: In Mexico some private importers began selling the Smart, a european micro car that makes the Mini feel like a Crown Vic in size.
The DC (car manufacturer) people decided they won´t import the car because the engine is not powerul enough (60 HP) for Mexico and they lobbied the government to prohibit the import of cars with less than X weight. (the only lighter car was of course the Smart). So here we are left without Smarts, a great car that can actually solve traffic problems in such crowded cities as Mexico City.
The funny thing is that the Smart is not powerful enough for Mexico, yet VW has been sellin the 44HP old Beetle for decades without any problems and even DC is selling a piece of junk called Atos with 50HP
Good thing Minis have excellent engines
