R50/53 Well, I got the CVT.....
Red Cooper with white top, 16 inch wheels and the multifunction steering wheel. I had requested info on the CVT a few weeks ago and ordered it without ever having driven one. Picked it up yesterday. Called the dealer a couple of weeks ago and they found one on the boat about to dock in Charleston.
I am very impressed with the car. The CVT has some neat features which allow you to get more power if you need it going uphill or passing and it is wonderful going up and down steep hills and windey roads. You are able to pay more attention to road position and not worrying with shifting. The transmission will ease the car down a steep hill almost like magic.
I'm sold. There is way plenty power for me. You just need to give yourself a half an hour extra time every time you go somewhere to talk to the gawkers. Well, I was a gawker too.

I have had my MINI since 02/01/03 and have just passed the breakin period. I took it pretty easy on the CVT transmission until last weekend. I finally utilized the other modes of the CVT like they were meant to be used.
In SD, it is a ball....I love the pickup, shifting and overall response.
In the shifting mode it is like driving a standard without he clutch, a whole lot fun also.
But overall, I think the use of three modes makes it well worth it. You will not be sorry......
You may want to get the Custom CVT Pedals also...they are really nice......

well, i can feel a kick pretty obvious from the car when using the shift, which annoys me a lot. (in other word, the feeling is like u r sitting in the car that has the driver who just started to learn how to drive manual.) also, in the D mode, the kick also happen under 30 mph, but after 30 mph, the car is very smooth. i tried to talk to the dealer about it, but they just kept telling me that the car is normal.

Congrats on your new car! I have a CVT and I love mine...I really like having the option to drive it as automatic when I am in city traffic...and it's very responsive on the highway.

I have no kick at all when in the 'D' mode. The transmission is smooth all the way to 90mph.......
Also, with the cruise control on the car just holds the speed really nice.

Make sure that your car's ECU has been upgraded to the 32.1 software. My car lurched plenty at low speeds before the upgrade.
As far as the kick in Steptronic, that is more a matter of you learning to let off the throttle just a bit when you shift. If you take your foot all the way off when you shift (a habit from driving manual transmissions), you'll get the hurky-jerky first-time-stick-driver feeling. Practice letting your foot up to the point where you are maintaining speed, but not accelerating. Then shift (up or down) and once it resets into the new gear, you can lay back down on the gas.
I hope this helps. I'm no resident CVT expert. Just a happy owner

Wow, CCC, your new MINI sounds just like my Annie - congrats!! I ordered her in March 02, without a test drive and have been "motoring" since last May; mine was one of the very first CVTs my dealer got in...
My CVT has a few issues, but I've yet to take her in for the most recent software upgrade; she's managed fine for 17,400 miles, but defo. want to get it done...
At any rate, congrats on your MINI and nice spec! Car must look ace!

DDROOM.....
i had a bunch of "wierdness" with my cvt before i got my dme updated.
the current version is 32.1.
that update seems to fix most cvt's problems!
i'd take it in to the dealer and get this done.
my car has been butter ever since!

Hey guys... thanks so much for the help! i'm gonna contact my dealer tomorrow and see what they can do.
other than the problem with the CVT, the car is great! i have my pepper white with xenon, premium & cold package, harman kardon, and 16" 5-star. also, i just change the rims to 17" and drop it with H&R spring. the car looks great! i love it!
hope to have the pic ready soon...
