It's true... Chicago and their ^%$#@! Denver Boot and towing litrally drove me to move away. I love almost everything about that place except their damned automotive hassles.

Gromit says it all again!! So Funny. I would literally have a hissy fit if some sucker stole my baby. I can't imagine any car stolen, let alone a MINI. They're so little, so defenceless, so cute...maybe the guy needed the car to pick up girls.

Another skeptic here.

I mean, the guy posted within a few hours of losing his car. I can understand why a NAM regular would do that, but a first-timer .

Now the conundrum is not knowing whether to hope that I'm right... in which case nobody's missing their beloved MINI... or to hope that I'm wrong in which case somebody is....

Are you thinking that the car was dumped?

A new MINI? Or crashed and abandoned? Time will tell.

I still choose to hope that it was towed!

And re: unsportsmanlike car issues... SF has something like spaces for only 60% of the cars int he city at any one time... so even excluding the corruption in the DPT that allows for fraudulent ticketing as a rule of thumb, you have whole areas of town where you don't dare park on the street with a ride you care about, lest you come back to find it scraped up and smashed. I played that game with my Karmann Ghia for years, and miraculously never got the dreaded nose cone smash... but DID come out one morning to find the car UP onto the sidewalk, with the entire back end crushed up around the engine block by one of my SUV pals out there. Amazing. So now, even though I *can* park in many tiny spaces here in the city (though many are so tiny that even a MINI, therefore no curreently produced car, can fit, and will be towed) I generally don't risk it...

Or this thingie...Millenium PLUS

My boss was looking into putting one of these GPS units on his son's car. www.digitaltrackingsolutions.com It has some interesting features...like GPS tracking you can do youself and a starter interrupt feature via cell phone or email. I don't know how much these units cost for a Mini. They say they are made in Germany. -Bob

Just remember that with any GPS unit that isn't military, there is a 15 meter error.

As far as i know, the Boomerang is one of the best ones on the market. (and canadian i might add ).

Boomerang specs (off their website).
• The only vehicle tracking system using the cellular network
• 24/7 tracking capabilities across North America
• Can track stolen vehicles located in underground parking garages as well as in shipping containers
• Can track stolen vehicles up to 3 feet of their actual location
• Recoveries by our in-house tracking team, typically within one hour

Most insurance companies here wont insure the more expensive vehicles here unless a Boomerang device (or other certified tracking devices, which im not aware of around here) is installed.

My co-worker had his SUV stolen in a Airport hotel parking lot while they were away on vacation. Just after the insurance company bought them a new SUV (about a month or two later), the cops called him up and said they found his vehicle along with others in several shipping containers near Toronto. Turns out one of the vehicles hand one of these Boomerang devices installed.
Kinda makes ya grin from ear to ear when you hear positive stories like that.

My Mini Anti Theft Device(s)

That really sucks!

Ok, My Mini is kept safely in a garage in my home (my 2nd fun car)...Door opener has rolling code protection (scanners can get codes from the older and cheap openers). I keep the plastic MINI key in my wallet, where it belongs !

If I leave on a trip in the other car,,,both Garage doors have rolling code LOCK OUT options!!

I also have 2 VERY noisy beagles and a 357 magnum...(Nevada is very anti gun control and the crooks know it.) Of course it could still be gotten but I will not make it easy!

A senior was recently approached by 3 thugs with baseball bats at a car wash,,,he pulled out his pistol and got all three!! If you are clean...concealed permits are also easy and the crooks know that too!

Yep...I am a SENIOR too...WITH AN MCS!

Not quite true. Consumer hand-held models today achieve less than 5 meter accuracy with WAAS corrections. My new Garmin 60csx often displays accuracy in the 3 meter range.

Even at 15 meters, I think I could find my stolen MINI if it was 50 feet away.

Still not reliable enough, and that error can be larger. The military owns and controls the GPS satillites, and in time of conflict, an is error built in.

I agree with Yucca. 15 meters is plenty close. If you can't find your car from that close, then I would stay away from your local shopping center parking lot

Interesting...your neighborhood doesn't have security cameras? Hope you get your car back soon.

LoJack is not widely used anymore so it's not very much of a benefit.

There are some misunderstandings here.

On GPS, Since 2000, the SA on GPS has been permently turned off. Since 2004, with WAAS signals found on most new receivers, location can be down to about 6' (that is well within the boundary of any road). With newer units using the L1 (I believe) signals your looking a 6".

Finally, "... and in time of conflict, an is error built in"

Not true. SA is permantly turned off and the newer satellites going up in the last few years may not even have that feature built in. If you look up GPS accuracy on the Internet you may find articles on local jamming of the signal (for a crisis), but that is not SA

As to LOJACK, that is not true either. LOJACK started as a small outfit in the Mass area expanding to New England. Now its in most states East of the Mississippi. Virtually every new car dealer will offer it to you and, in fact, CARMAX new cars get a $100 discount on installation. The major advantage of LOJACK is that being a radio signal, it doesnt need to see the sky.

If you get one of the new GPS/Cell phone units, if you can't see the sky, they can't track and if your buried deep enuff, no cell service AND ... there are MANY parts of the US with no cell phone service. You may not think that true but just drive across the vast stretches out West and you will find NADA.

When I first read this three days ago my first reaction was to call BS. I'm kinda new around here so I didn't. But I'm callin' it now. (Geez, now I'm in trouble.)

My mom just bought a new Toyota and the dealer offered LoJack.

I was wondering why many don't think the car was really stolen. Is it because of the few posts he has or are MINIs unstealable?

To all who have joined the Skeptic Club. Thanks for the support(NOT) !! Just because I do not post anything on the site does not mean I am not a fellow motorer and do not search the site every night for useful information. I have been a member since Feb of 2006. I just dont post alot!!
To all who have mourned my loss with me, Thank you for your condolences for they are much appreciated!!! Well my news is to report no news!! My mini is still missing in action and I am still driving the monster pontiac G6. My insurace agent has told me that if they do not find the car by august 14 they will pay it off. I went to mini this weekend and talked to a motoring advisor about a new one, she showed me what was comming in on the boat and I put a refundable deposit on a MCSCa Hot orange with blue top. Only time will tell!! At least I do not have to be without a mini for too long!!

What possible advantage could someone gain lying about having their car stolen?
Is there a rule that they must post somewhere else first on NAM to gain credibility?
Geez you guys...cut this person a break. His/her car was stolen...why would you doubt it?
