My advise to you is to change it yourself and not wait for the dealer if you are that concerned. 17000 miles o: on a oil change is way high even for synthetic oil. Me I changed my at 5000 miles and the dealer will do it a 10000 and me at 15000 and so on.

Dude, that is a crazy amount of time to wait between oil changes. You need to change the oil yourself or pay to have the dealer do it. With synthetic, you can go about 5k between changes.

The mini will change how many more miles until you need to change the oil, by knowing whether you are driving on the highway or city. At least that is what I have been told

I know the computer determines the oil change interations (time between oil changes)

No one has mentioned his computer could be faulty sensing the degrees of driving. The time to change is determined by the roughness of driving. Someone who drives really hard and revs the engine, is going to change thier oil sooner then the slower driver.

Loaded, your passion has entirely overtaken your typing skills. What are you talking about?

Did you get an oil change at 9000 miles? Do you now have 26,000 + miles on your car and have only had one oil change? Is your dealer now refusing to change your oil under warranty until you reach 30,000 miles?

MINI dealers should change your oil for free approximately every 10,000 miles for the first 30,000 miles. If they're telling you something else, they're wrong. I have heard of some people having problems with this...but the solution is to go to another dealer who's more cooperative.

If you've waited 17,000 miles on a single oil change, you've waited waaaaaaay too long.

I do believe that's a single sentence! Amazing...

If they won't change your oil, go to the parts department, buy MINI oil and a filter, and change it yourself. BUT, non-MINI oil WILL NOT void your warranty.

No, not "punks", but crooks. Or at least morons. Go find another dealer/service department.

It's insane that they'd void the warantee for changing your oil. BUT, if you really care about following their nutso rules, buy some of their friggin oil from the parts counter, along with a filter and o ring, and go home and change it. <shrug> I changed mine, like many others, at 5k, and when I talked to the rep aboutordering a filter, the service guy just told me to make sure to use synthetic 5w-30 (I think he said 5w-30, I used whatever it was he said).

So just go do it and relax.

well its motor city mini in detroit, its no big deal you see they treat me ok its just like i think they tell me what to do a little to much cause they are comfortable with me or somthing like ken wont allow me to toch my car (being putting any mod on it what so ever) its kinda funny really,
he calls me the little brother he never had ! so i geuss he just voices his opinion more so with me than others,
wich is all good i like the guys over their alot.

its not so much ken but kens boss the guy can be a real jerk to those guys when they try to be personable,

once i was over their ken was talking with me being his freindly self when a little later his boss pulled him in back and started giving him attitude for conversing with the customer, so needless to say i felt bad

but i thank you all for your inpute and i will start shanging my oil every 5000 miles after this fiasco is over
thanks again

True synthetic oils in a new engine will last up to 15k, depending on how you drive. Do a search about oil on any of the MINI forums, and you'll get this info. Even the Car Talk guys have made it clear on national radio that things are very different w/ new synthetic oil technology from the old "every 3K" days of oil changes for regular oil in older makes of vehicles. MINI is changing the oil at 10k for very easy drivers, and less for the other kind- each car figures out which kind you are on it's computer. Sooner is not going to hurt, of course, but sticking w/ the advice of BMW folks who are backing up their warranties doesn't worry me much. I've got 2000 miles on my Cooper, and it's telling me to get an oil change at a little over 7500 miles, which means that the car is aware of my propensity for petrol pushing throught the twistys. I'll be in to the dealership when I hit 7525 on odometer. I'll use the money saved on extra oil changes for gas in the tank.

Hi,

Do you have a larger pic of your car that you can post? You've got the exact color combo I think I'm going to get and I'd love to get a good look at it first.
Thanks!

I believe MINI says the first oil change is around 10k miles. The next one is not until 25k miles. In other words, they recommend 10k the first time and 15k thereafter. It is my understanding that BMW recommends every 15k for their cars as well.

loaded, check out this thread. Ken's second post has a link to a good discussion of exactly what you're asking.

Another facet of this whole issue is the debate over whether or not Castrol Syntec, the oil that comes in your MINI, should be relied upon as heavily as true synthetic oils, which it is not. I for one have been convinced not to depend on it for more than a few thousand miles. I changed my oil to Mobil One at 2500 miles, and I'll leave it in until the 10k dealer oil change. (Remember, BMW only warranties your engine for 50k miles!)

The warranty warning is a bunch of BS. As long as you use 5W-30, they have absolutely no right to feed you that line of crap.

They also recommend 10,000 for the first air filter change.
If you go by their schedule...I've got a bridge you might be
interested in. If you stick with their schedule your car, I personally
guarantee, will not have a major engine failure in the first 50,000
miles. Beyond that you are on your own.
