Speed Traps...Do You Flash?

We have talked about if other Mini owners wave or flash lights.

Now I am curious about how many drivers flash their headlights at the on coming traffic to warn of cops ahead of them looking to make money. With more and more departments and states getting the LAZAR guns our top of the line radar detectors are becoming useless.

What I have seen more often than not...no one flashes and the ones that do are usually pick-up trucks and male drivers. Growing up it seemed that everyone flashed, today....it is all about me....or...sorry I am on the phone I can not help you right now.

My answer......

I flash everytime I see a cop in a position that looks like they are working at making money. I also wave back at the driver giving me the great warning.

That, I believe, is just about illegal in every state and i have seen it enforced (aiding and abetting or something like that) where the police have pulled over people just waiting on the other side of the road for the flashers.

If caught doing that in CA you will get a bigger ticket than the guy speeding . You can also pretty much guarantee a ticket which will include anything even close to being out of compliance on your car, exhaust, window tint etc. In the hills there is a code but we are very carefull in using it.

I don't. The only reason why is because I know a few officers and this came up for discussion once. They have purposely sat on the opposite side of the road from where a radar point is set up. If they see someone flashing their lights. They'll pull them over and obviously the driver will not admit to to. At this point, the officer will issue a citation telling them to have their lights checked out and bring the inspection to court showing that their headlights check out fine. The police get no money from this but they say it's the amusement factor they enjoy.

"Sorry officer -- I thought I saw another MINI on the other side of the highway. Just flashing to say 'ello!"

I do it. Take that, Johnny Law!

I've never heard of anyone getting pulled over for this. Ever. And my dad basically drove for a living, never once letting a speed trap go un-foretold to those oncoming. Same with my grandfather.

I saws it with my own two eyes. They guy right in front of me didn't wait long enough to bring is flashers to the table. So the cop responded with HIS flashers (you know... the big red and blue ones) and pulled him over. He wasn't speeding either.

There is a huge difference between flashing ur lights for speed traps and driving over the speed limit for what is usually a one point violation. As others have pointed out, I have SEEN this happen. "They" do not like it at all and I have watched them in the "other" lanes just waiting for people to flash.

And as others have said, I would be willing to bet they nail you for everything they can find. There is a reason they are waiting for the flashers and its not to be kind

I surely have....but that is to avoid discussion on dangerous potentially life-threatening behavior.

Nope, it's illegal, and at least a $200 ticket in PA.

I have tickets that say otherwise

I don't flash, but for some reason my hand always seems to slip and accidentally flick the highs about a half mile after I pass a speed trap...

I guess if you are clueless and do not know what the front of an oncoming cop car looks like or not seeing a cop on the sholder...then I guess you deserve to get pulled over.

This was really a simple YES/NO question.

I guess we should stop this thread. I did not mean for it to turn it into a moral/illegal issue thread and for that I am sorry.

And too all those who flash lights and/or ta tas I thank you!

In Ohio they will ticket you for it. My friend got caught in a trap for doing 65 in a 45. After he realizes he will soon be followed by a cop, he warns the people coming the other way. A cop on the other side sees this, must have radioed the cop pulling out to shell my friend, and told him he was flashing his lights. Well they counted it as 2 tickets (one for speeding on for warning others) and in Ohio, 2 tickets under 18 means you get your license suspended. He hasnt driven freely since...

Sorry to disagree but it is not a simple question when it covers an illegal position.

Darwin will find a way ....

So I guess my CB radio in my truck is illegal and why are radard detectors only illegal in two states? But flashing lights are illegal.

FYIW, flashing lights is a common practice for big truck drivers and really any driver if you will, it also lets passing traffic know they have safely cleared the front of your vehicle. It is amazing what you learn driving 18whrs for a living....IMHO, everyone should know what it is like to drive a big rig, people might respect them just a bit more than they do. It is a whole other can of worms.

I guess I understand.

Anyway like I said...we should shut down this thread.

I flash after seeing a speed trap or accident in the road - especially in the mountains or on twisty roads.

Still do it
