Driver window doesn't seal to weather strip?

Hello,

I bought my Mini a few months ago, used 2004 JCW. And for some time I noticed my driver's side window made a lot of wind noise. Well, last night I got out my flashlight and took a look and sure enough, the window does not seat up right onto the window seal. There is actually a gap between the window and the seal on the pillar in an area about 6 inches long. How does something like that happen?

Guess it's off to the dealer. Has anyone else had an issues like this?

Thanks,
John

6 inches is a huge gap to have when the window is "closed". May be all you need is to reset the "window seal" function. See, since your MINI has frameless doors, whenever you open or close the door, the glass automatically drops/raises a 1/4 of an inch to clear the weatherstrip and to ensure a tight seal to keep out windnoise, etc.

To reset the function:

1) Turn on car
2) lower and raise BOTH windows with the toggle switches.
3) Once both windows are up, press and hold BOTH window toggle switches for no less than 10 seconds.

4) test. Your glass should raise and drop 1/4 of an inch when closing/opening the doors.

If it doesn't, then take it back to the dealer.

Sorry, I guess my description was not very good. I do get the drop when opening the windows. The problem area is the window and seal at the back of the front window where it meets the pillar. the window is supposed to snug up against the seal along the whole back pillar (B pillar?) but about half way up, it is pulled away from the seal by a good 2 millimeters or so and that happens for a good 6 inches in length up the window.

I probably need to take a picture but hopefully this explains it a bit better.

hmmn, no one?

I guess I am the only one then. Off to the dealers next week. Will update this thread in case someone else has this issue and runs a search later on down the line.

I've got the same issue. Mine goes up and down as well when opening the door, but when closed, it's about an 1/8th inch to 1/4 inch from being up under the lip it's supposed to go under. Does that make any sense? With a good cross-wind, it sucks my window out, and whistles...

Your car is used so you probably dont know this for certain but is the window glass factory or was it ever replaced?

To be honest, I am not sure if it has been replaced. I believe it has the Mini logo on it though. (do they even have that on the front window? )

Want-a-mini, the problem is not at the top of the front window, it is at the back. And unfortunately it is away from the seal with the car in my garage. I really need to take a picture and show you all what I mean. Maybe I can draw a quick diagram and post it. I will do that and get it up.

Thanks,
John

If you could snap a picture, I think that would help out tremendously!

OK, made a small gif using someone else's pic. Please let me know if it is something that I should not use and I will remove it right away.

See the blown up pic, and the red strip between the window and the b-pillar? That is where you can actually see into the inside of the car without looking through the window. That is where the gap is. Also, it is not that the window is too far forward, it actually bows out a bit from teh window seal and thus the gap. Hopefully this helps a bit. I will definitely take some pics of the actual window tonight and post them tomorrow.

There are 2 screws at the very bottom of each door. These screws allow you to adjust the angle of each piece of door glass. I assume this could be the problem, that one of these screws is "Off spec" thus causing the gap you are describing.

You should be able to do it yourself.

Good luck.

JBravo:

Any luck re-adjusting the window angle with the 2 screws?

Would this help me? My Passenger window (the top front of the window) sticks out above the weather stripping when completely lowered. Driver side completely disappears when lowered, but is just shy of being under the lip at the roofline when closed...

Maybe.

The 2 bottom door screws adjust the angle of the glass in the door. Probably you have a problem with the power window actuator as well.

Has the glass been replaced on that door?

Uh oh, sounds like the evil BMW window regulator gremlins are haunting your poor hapless MINI, and the only cure is a dealer trip to exorcise those pesky little buggers...

BMW + the contractor who has made their window mechanisms over the past 5 decades = constant source of frustration, from the lowliest MINI to the priciest Z8 Hang in there, dealers are used to resolving anything to do with windows. :impatient Jimbo

Not to my knowledge, but apparently, my MINI had been in a wreck before I bought it (wasn't on Carfax, and dealer said no accidents). It was brought to my attention when Randy Webb noticed a lot of parts under the hood had been replaced... I did notice that my door sill "Cooper S" plate has been bent, and the black strip that was circled above (the one on the backside of the window) previously rubbed and scarred that strip...

I kinda had a gut feeling that some kind of accident caused this problem, but was hesitant to inquire.... So much for Carfax Jimbo

Well, the 2 screws at the bottom of the door didn't work, but man what an easy way to change the angle of the window.

So, it is still off to the dealer for me. Thankfully I am still under warranty.

Thanks again for everyones help. I will let you know in this thread what the dealer says/does.
