When stopping at a restaurant off the M1 in the 1980s, my family thought that the English discriminated against people who trained football teams. Little did we know that only the busses carrying rowdy soccer fans were banned there:
"NO FOOTBALL COACHES ALLOWED!"

The edge of the road that Americans call the shoulder is known in England as "the verge".

Fetch(er) and Toss(er) mean the same thing as ****(er) in England.

Closet can sometimes mean Toilet in England;
Wardrobe can mean Closet. Keeps you on your toes!

Then there are these: In England a "kerb" is between the pavement (sidewalk) and the street. A "gaol" is where people are locked-up by the police.

"America and England are two countries separated by the same language."

The first time I was even in London, I was most amused by the signs that read "Mind the Children" I was young and with my parents and somehow thought that meant I was in charge...alas, my dad had other thoughts of what "Mind the Children" meant.

I love the Mind the Gap voice messege that comes on in the english subways...I mean the underground. I remember when I was walking down the street in London I saw a house for rent but over there the sign said to let and someone put an "i" in between the words and the sign said "toilet" haha
