F55/F56 Boot & Bonnet
Boot & Bonnet
I still have a 68' Triumph Spitfire, so I'm more than familiar with the Brit-speak boot and bonnet terminology that you get at the Mini dealership.
So why then, I have to ask, does my car tell me the "TRUNK IS OPEN" when the back hatch doesn't latch????
I'm afraid to leave the bonnet unlatched and start the car as it may tell me the "HOOD IS OPEN"
Oh the Tragedy of it all!!

Way back in the archives someone started an anti-britspeak thread. It took of in wild abandon and lasted quite a while. I'll see can I find it. Maybe it is time for a resurrection.
If you had paid better attention to your Owner's Lounge tracking, you'd know why it calls the Boot a Trunk and the Bonnet a Hood...
See, they've been specially trained to use those terms!
AT VEHICLE DISTRIBUTION CENTER:
Your MINI has arrived on U.S. shores and is going through one of its final stages of training and quality control at a MINI Vehicle Distribution Center. The center serves as yet another chance for a comprehensive, bumper-to-bumper inspection. It's also where your MINI will be taught not to make fun of Americans who call the "bonnet" a "hood" or the "boot" the "trunk."

Just like teachers in the olden days would whack a kid's knuckles for writing left handed to teach them to be right handed. It was done out of ignorance and superstition. Sir Alec called them boots and bonnets and dampers and binders and windscreens and gear boxes and all that stuff while he was inventing the Mini on a napkin, so who has the juice to over-ride the man?
