After lots of reading, it looks like it's made 'entirely' by DaimlerChrysler. The engine will be replaced with a Puegot made replacement once the contract expires in 2007. This is because TRITEC (owned by BMW and DaimlerChrysler) is now a major part of The BMW Groups major rival (Diamler out of DiamlerChrysler).

Interesting ... the MINI engine is a direct derivative of the Dodge Neon's 2.0 engine.

Could this explain why I enjoy driving both my MINI and my PT Cruiser?
Well, at least my PT (now 4+ years old) still runs like the day I got it. It's never been back to the dealer (except to replace a window switch one of my childrens' friends snapped off). So if that is any indication of the reliability, I'm happy.
Annette

Edit: I was just on the PT Cruiser club forums and realized my PT is actually 5+ years old!! Boy, time flies.

Umm, no One is red and one is pepper white, duh

I think my son would like for me to mix them up and unknowingly give him the keys to the MINI, not likely though.

im pretty sure that teh engine is designed by chrystler, as it is used in european PT cruisers or something. and it is assembeled in brazil. the transmission was desiged by Getrag, a german company. this im really sure of. then the whole car comes together in Oxford. i think its all on the window sticker or the car...but im not sure for 2005+ MYs.

The engine was designed by Chrysler for the Europe versions of the PT Cruiser - it is built in Brazil by TRITEC a joint venture between BMW & Diamler-Chrysler. The Tranny is a German Getrag 6-speed for the S. I have no idea what is in the Cooper????

Oh well, this is the last year for the old Tritec - 07 it is a Puegot(?) turbo. I'll wait till 08 or latter before trading my trusty 04 MCS in. No sense buying an "experimental" year car.
