33,500 miles service almost up

I'm at 33,500 miles and I am almost out of service warrantee. Should I spend $420 to extend it to 50k. 16500 more miles. What if I blow the clutch? what are the odds that it happens in the next 16500 miles? Any other reasons to get the service plan?

Well...you have 33,500 on a 2005 car. Don't you think its a good idea to cover you for that last bit. Or if you plan to keep the car longer maybe extend the warranty past 50k.

Since its an 05, I would do it. Just think what it could cost you if somthing goes wrong. It couldn't hurt. Lemme know what you plan on doing!

I would also go for it. It's $420 well spent. What if something happends that is way more than $420....and would be under warrenty, BUT you didn't get the ext. warrenty.....Get the warrenty and be happy.

I keep getting confused on this...isn't the warranty for 4 years or 50,000 miles? It's preventive maintainence that you can extend from 36,000 miles/3 years. An oil change, filter change and stuff like that. Maybe I'm wrong...not sure anymore.

Extended warranty and extended service are two different things, make sure you know what you are buying. If you blow a clutch and find out you paid $420 for three more oil changes, you will be pi$$ed.

I must have confused it too. Ok, this is straight from the MINI brochure:

Warrenty:

4-year/50,000-mile
12-year/unlimited-mileage warrenty against rust and corrosion perforation.

Full Mantenance:

3-year/36,000-mile warrenty.

The Full Matenance is the "service" warrenty. And in that case, just to get oil changes...I'm going to do that myself. If you can change the oil yourself and check fluids, do it yourself and save the money. If not, get the ext. mantenance warrenty.

Like UJ said - know what you're buying

I'm of the opinion that it's a waste of money. But, and it's a big but, I like to work on my car and have the facilities to do it. If you aren't a wrench turner or don't have the tools/garage to do service items i.e. brake jobs, oil changes then $400+ might be money well spent.

But remember they aren't in the business to loose money, these things (extended service/protection plans) provide the biggest profit margin - that's why you can get them on a toaster now a days

My clutch lasted much further then the throw-out bearing did. It made it to 87,000 miles, I think. The clutch had a lot of life still left. Cost to replace was ~ $750, with my providing my upgraded T/O bearing, pressure plate and clutch. That is a discounted price for being a club member and having a Dealership that offers them.

Good Luck with the decision.......

I'm in the process of buying. Recieved a paper in a package from my MA last week. Things to look over before going down to the dealership to pick up.

I can extend warranty and maintenance at these prices:

Full Maintenance Program

Extends 3yr/36000 to 4yr/100000 bumper to bumper
COST: $499

Extended Waranty Offered by GE

New mini cooper S 7yr/100000 with $50 deductible
COST: $2,139
New Mini Cooper 7yr/100000 with $50 deductible
COST: $1,933

I would say that he is talking about the first one. Maintenance......

No your right I meant the service...oil, clutch...

Lamont told me it included the clutch too. Which does not make sense to me since that is not a wear item.

Would you be willing to mail or fax that to me? I'd like to show it to Lamont. 100,000k sounds alright to me.

When I worked at Best Buy a few years ago part time they wanted me to try to sell a $19.99 Service Plan for a $19.99 hand held vacuum. Never even attempted it though.

My point exactly

My son used to work in retail sales and the commission he got for selling the PPP (product protection plan) was 3x the commission he got for selling the item

Now, having beat up on PPP - I do think there are areas and items that it would be a good "thing" to have one, this however IMHO is not one of those things.

I was looking at the join dates and had decided that this was a very old thread until I figured out it was just last week you got that price.

My dealer is trying to sell me the 4/50,000 maintenance contract for $799, though he does throw in free weekly car washes.

Since this is a actually a Mini product he is selling, can I buy this from any dealership at whatever price they are offering or maybe even haggle since it's obvious they are marking it up to whatever they want?

That is my understanding also. It would be interesting to see what MINI would say???

Extending the maintenance from 3 yr to 4 yr entitles you to 1 additonal oil change, and maybe an extra set of brake pads, even throwing in wiper blades, that's hardly worth $799, I can't think of what else you can get replaced from normal wear & tear.

The way they are pushing it is that you might require your 40,000 service check during that time and the maintenance contract covers it. Don't know what the service check does that would be $799.

After thinking it over a bit and reading a few dozen different mini forums my understanding is that:

- You can buy the service contract anytime before your three year is up (they are trying to pressure me into saying I need to buy it when I take the car).
- It's a big crap shoot whether it will cover anything.
- You can buy this from any Mini dealer with variable pricing.

if I'm wrong on any of this lemme know.
