Oh Deer!!

Was cruising back from Santa Fe NM with the fam (wife and 4 yo daughter) about 10:00 pm and 85 mph when I come over a hill and see a splatter of blood right in front of me followed by a huge mass of deer in my lane!
Swerving was not an option at that speed so just hit it dead on (no pun intended). Somehow it rolled under the entire lenght of the car, not even crushing the front end. Felt the car lift slightly and settle back down. Pulled over and looked under the car, covered in blood and deer fur

But.........No visible damage!!

Took it to the dealer today where they said the only damage was an exhaust bracket ($35).

Could have been a LOT worse, hugged my passengers pretty hard after that one. I am one lucky dude.

Peace

Kevin

No, seriously, did you make sure the deer was dead? When I was young I was on a family trip and a deer was hit by a motorist on the other side of the highway. My dad made a u-turn, stopped in front of the poor thing so my mother and I couldn't see it, and BLAM! shot it. I guess it was pretty messed up, and while I am no gun fan, that is one reason to have one.

Hit a deer on a foggy highway at night in my other car doing about 70, no time to swerve with a car next to me. Hit the deer head on. I will never forget the sound of the impact. Suprisingly my car continued to drive normally. When I pulled over I couldn't open my door and had massive damage to my front end and left fender. It's a good thing he went under, because I was driving my convertible! Damage was $3500 bucks!! Hope I don't have a repeat incedent in my Mini

A similar thing happened to me awhile back, a deer was hit but not dead when we came on it. I did not (or do not) have a gun so I sat there until I could flag down someone who did. Rural Colorado? Didn't take long!

Yes, no doubt about it. This deer I hit was definately done with its body. It was lots of dead.

Same thing happened to my wife and I about ten years ago in my Mustang. We were travelling along a local state highway just after dark and we came across a minivan pulled halfway off the road (still halfway in our lane) with its flashers on. I slowed down to 30-40 mph saw that nothing was coming, so I moved around to pass. What I didn't see was the dead deer directly in my lane just in front of the van. I drove up and over the deer with the Mustang, but no damage was done, just a lot of deer hair stuck to the underside.

I've got a friend who hunts a lot (including deer) and came upon a deer/car accident a year or two ago. The deer was seriously injured but wasn't dead, so he pulled out a pocket knife, went up to the deer, grabbed it by the head, and cut its throat. Sounds rather gruesome, but it was the right thing to do for the deer instead of letting it lie there in a lot of pain, and dying slowly.

Bambi called.
He wants his mom back.

---seriously though---

I'm glad you are ok and that was all the damage that happened. I don't have those baby-little human-thingies yet, but I can imagine what a relief it was when everything was ok!

You're lucky, as most deer/cycle accidents, especially at that speed, ends in a fatality to the driver, passenger, or both. Glad you're still with us.

I remember seeing a Porsche 911 a few years that hit a deer. The sloped hood scooped the deer up and cause the legs of the deer to break through the windshield and it kept kicking. Luckily no one inside got injured as their hooves are extremely sharp.

Memories

Years ago I was driving my mini van ( GMC Safari ) up by our cabin - we were loaded with all the family going to dinner. Noticed a "dark spot" on the road ahead - yep, it was an elk . I swerved to go behind it - another elk -- swerved again - another elk -- there were 3 elk crossing a 2 lane road . Ended up going between elk number 2 & 3 . I swear there was elk snot on one side of the van and elk sh$t on the other!!!

After that I was nominated official night driver at the cabin:impatient

Deer Stories

My deer story happened 10 or so years ago when the we were driving to Florida. My dad was driving in the left lane doing 75 with a Semi behind him when this deer came out of nowhere from the median on the left. It jumped out crossed our lane, hit the driver's door on a car in the right lane and then bounced back into the grassy median. The car that was hit never stopped to look at their door, which was completely mashed. They just continued on like nothing happened. My dad was glad that the deer went back into the grass because if it didnt we would have either hit it at 75 or be rear-ended by the semi if we slammed on the brakes.
