How accurate is the Speedo?

As the title asks, just how accurate is the Speedometer? And is the digital readout any more accurate? I hit 141 this morning and am curious what the real speed is around there.

Thx

I have a Garmin GPS and the speed on the GPS and the speedo are within 1mph of each other.

The speedometer is purposly inaccurate. It is scaled fast. e.g. if you are ACTUALLY going 60, the speedometer, depending on tire size would read 62-68, or something like that. I had the same question and called MINI on it. They do it to avoid legal disputes. this way, they can say, if the speedometer said 60, you WERE at LEAST going 60.

I heard the same. The speedo is off about 3mph (faster than your actual speed). My Center Speedo and and digital readout are coordinated perfectly too, I guess meaning they are both off the same!

With my GPS, I'm almost exactly 3mph high......73 on the speedo = 70mph.

You can also judge it by one of those on road speed signs the police use. I went by one the other day and it said I was going roughly ~3mph under what my speedo said.

I'm about 2mph off at 70+ according to my GPS.

speedos are usually a few mph higher to account for speeding/limits/helping you not get caught. make sure you have the standard size wheels/tires the car came with so the speedo isn't thrown off.

Is it possible to get the speedo re-calibrated after you change to diff. wheel size?

Umm, I think you got it reversed. a 136 readout would mean 133 MPH .

At 70 mph, the speedo (digital readout on the tach) is within 1 mph of my GPS unit.

Do you mean "at most going 60"?

I am not blessed with GPS, so I do it the old fashioned way. Get on an interstate with mile markers. Set your cruise at 60 MPH and use a stopwatch to see how long it takes to go 1 mile. 60 MPH = 1 mile per minute.

I have to set my cruise at 63 or 64 MPH to click off 1 mile per minute with my Prada Spec 2, and about 61 MPH with the winter snow tires.

From this calculation, you should be able to figure your difference and apply it to any speed.

Just my 2 cents.

I noticed mine is reading a few MPH faster than actual speed when I was using my GPS the other day. I wondered why everyone was passing me :-p
