I wish 6th gear were higher, too. The revs (3000 rpm) are the same at 70mph in 6th as my old Jetta 1.8T was in 5th. Seems like MINI could have made 6th taller, maybe 2500 rpm instead of 3000.

As it is, I think 3rd and 4th gears are pretty redundant. Maybe I'm just not pushing hard enough!

Well I'm meregin on the highway in 3rd, then skip 4,5 and go straight to 6th. Ithink that they should have made 4th the size of 5th and then 5th and 6th real tall so that when we get track day or you rent one by the unrestricted autobahn you can really hammer out the top speeds! If it weren't for the gears I think this would be a 160-170 MPH car stock.

I have yet to see gear ratios that I can understand. The write-ups from MINI is hard to understand. I read one that looks like some gears have a dirrerent final ratio.

Except for the shape of the car!

It does resemble a rounded brick!

And yes, there are two final drive ratios for the trans-axle. Some gears are one one shaft, some on others. Both shafts engage the ring gear, and both shaft gears have different numbers of teeth.

Just look at the final drive ratios for each gear to get an idea of the gear spacing...

Thats a little more complex than I can handle with out thinking real hard, I was just commenting on how at highway speeds 3rd feels like plenty and form what I hear about the guys on the track and autobahn, the car can definately handle 150 and usually does most of it in fifth. With 200hp("stage one" to 250+hp(twincharge) the top speed is about the same. 4th, 5th and 6th are much closer in ratio (based on feel so I'm using relative comparisons) than 1st,2nd,3rd so if that same spacing was applyed to the last three gear I hypothosyze the car could handle faster speeds because 100 hp differences, should overcome a good deal of the aero drag not that any of this matters b/c the autobahn, and slect parts of it at that are the only place that it would matter, more for bragging rights I guess. If I remember I'll take a look at it when I'm a little more awake. Don't get me wrong I love the way the MCS handles its more of a academic matter IMO

I wish 6th was a little taller. I am still not used to crusing down the highway at 3000 RPM. In my Acura I could cruse at 1900.

But I am impressed at how much torque the car has when crusing. I was worried that coming from a V6 that I would be losing low end grunt. But the MCS is always willing and ready to go.

For most cars...

top gear is really for gas milage, and not power.

I guess it depends what kind of car you are coming from... I find that from 70 up, 6th pulls strongly

fj0,

Thanks! Do you know that the ring and pinion ration is? Like in my 66 ChevyII it was 4.56 to 1 in my Durango it is 3.92 to 1.

Thanks

It seems to me that the problem isn't 6th being too low but that people want to shift at 3 grand... These cars really are just getting going at 3 grand! Rev it up!!!

At 3 grand in 6th I'm already at 70 - if I rev it up I'll get a big fat speeding ticket!

What are you all talking about? I've never seen a need for more than 4 gears for legal street use.
