how long did you have your MC before you made the switch? I explicity did not use the word "upgrade" because I love my MC and I don't necessarily consider it an upgrade purely because the models are two different vehicles that individuals choose for several individual reasons.

The point of this post is the idea that I may be doing something nutty and trading/selling my 2005 PW/PW Cooper which was purchased new in July 2005 off the lot, which currently has 10,100 miles.

I've been eyeing the MCS more and more as I see them on the road, but the kicker for me, other than the extra power was desire to experience custom ordering the car to 100% spec satisfaction as well as the fact that I've fallen in love with Royal Grey.

I'm not keen on waiting for an 07' as I would not purchase a 1st year new model build, which means if I wanted an MCS with the turbo I'd have to wait til 2008. If only I had waited til' a little later last year when they debuted RG, I would have held myself back impatiently.

I've pretty much justified this to myself in my head and heart, but I'm curious to know if anyone else has also succumbed to throwing away a few thousand in sales tax for a situation like this?

 

I "upgraded" after close to 2 years in a Cooper, but I actually made money when I sold mine. Bought it slightly used for $16k drove it 20k miles and sold it for $18k. Those were the days...

 

I had two Coopers before moving to a MCS. I put 24,000 miles on the first before it was totalled in an accident. The second I purchased used and took from 17,000 miles up to 32,000 miles then sold it.

I had a 2004 MC CVT for 11 months and I "upgraded" to a 2005 MCSa because I wanted more power when I smashed the gas. Especially when I had a passenger or 2. Also I had a stripped down MC and I wanted to order a loaded up MCS. So yah its an expensive hot MCS.

 

My 2 Sense:

I had an 03 MC IB/W which I loved. I put 30k miles on it and like you I kept eyeing the MCS. Last fall I traded for an 06 MCS PW/PW. It is great! I occasionally enjoy some spirited drving and I really like the increased horsepower and the melodic humm of the supercharger. WHile both are great cars and fun to drive, I am now addicted to the additional grunt and growl of the MCS.

 

I sold an 05 MC with 12k on it for an 04 MCS with 36k on it.


Well worth the change, best decision ive ever made.

 

I was considering making the switch while I can still get a new '06 MCS, but several things are causing me to keep my MC. I would have wanted the same color and interior on an MCS if I got one, but MINI discontinued Jet Black and cloth interior. Neither one are complete deal breakers, but since I'm getting a new Mustang GT later this year, I really don't "need" the extra power of the MCS. If it wouldn't be for getting the Mustang, I probably would get the MCS.

Kept my '05 MCc... got an '06 MCS JCW. Love both and would not trade them. Two different cars with very distinct personalities.

 

I had an MC one year before trading for an S. if you can afford to and want to then why not? FWIW, I prefer the MC in city driving and the MCS on the highway . . . now, if only I could have both!

 

I agree...you defintely "get something" special when moving to an MCS. But you give up something, too. Same works the other way...you give up something driving a Cooper, but you "get something" special as well. So the "jump" comes at a price.

Me?....I'm in that small sub-set of owners who cannot justify driving a car that doesn't get at least in the 30s mpg.

 

I must have a lead foot from hell! The only way I get close to 30 mpg is in the MCc on the highway on cruise control. We took the MCS out for a road trip yesterday, 200+ miles, and only avareged 27 mpg. Granted the car only has 375 miles on it, but I doubt it will get much better. In city driving the MCc averages about 24.8 mpg with an average speed of about 30 mph for the intire 300 mile range.

 

I thought about downgrading, but not for long. I'm happy with what I have

 

Had my MC for a year and a half and traded it in on an MCSC, and I have never looked back. Even made a few hundred dollars on the trade in.

 

Bought my 02 MC in 03 and loved it. Spent a few grand on mods and then saw a LOADED 03 MCS in 05 for a deal that was just too good and grabbed it. Still trying to sell the MC .

 

I had my MC CVT for just over a year and sold it for only a little less than the original invoice price. I was tempted to upgrade to an MCS within a couple of months of buying the MC, but made myself wait the year out to justify original purchase somewhat.
As the Cooper was my first car I wanted a little time to get used to things before diving in and buying a (relatively) high powered sporty manual like the MCS. I could see myself getting a little too enthusiastic too quickly. The CVT Cooper was the perfect antidote to that..
Loving all the extras on the S that I didn't have before and was so jealous of, most of all the beautiful whine and the err.. challenger of driving my first stick shift.

Well I called Long Beach MINI today to put my name on the list for the MCS of my dreams. I was originally quoted 4-5 months but when I mentioned that I bought my 05' Cooper there last July they said that my previous patronage would get me bumped up the list somewhat. Maybe that means 3-4 months instead...so maybe I'll have the Cooper for a whole year officially before it gets traded or sold Because keeping a car for a whole 9-10 months just sounds too ridiculous, even for me.

I bought MINI #1 (all-Pure Silver Cooper) from Long Beach Aug. 28, 2002, and put in my order at LB MINI for Wicked Wanda (MINI #2) on January 13, 2003, when I just HAD to have an all-Jet Black MCS. Took delivery on April 4, and left on my first 10,000+ mile roadtrip on 4/4/03. I loved the Cooper but I prefer my MCS.

 

I have a MCA loaner while my MCS GETRAG is in the shop getting the upper strut mounts replaced... thing is slow as a wet sock... maybe its just the CVT, because I had a stick MC as my last loaner, and it was pretty spunky!

 

My MC was a stick, and I have driven several CVTs as loaners. There is defintely a big difference in the "get up and go" in the manual MC's favor.

 

Definitly, I was actually surprised by my Stick MC loaner, man it was a quick little thing. I had a lot of fun that week running that little guy to its limits! But this CVT... i floor the pedal and have to wait about 5 seconds before any power comes up. I almost turned around and went back to the dealer after i got it thinking that there must be some thing wrong with it...

There is something very wrong with it:
It has an automatic transmission.

 

We still have our nearly 4 year old 2002 MC CVT with 36K miles and the car is definetely a keeper.

I have owned 2 MCS along the '02 MC (2004 & 2005) and love both models, they are a blast to own and drive. I sold the '04 MCS over a year ago and ordered a '05 MCS 6MT that currently has 10,200 troublefree miles and will be 1 year old on March 20th.

 

My '02 MC CVT is very quick off the line and have surprised a few modded MCS in the street every now and then..
