Resurecting this thread because I'm getting my windshield replaced on Saturday. It's safetelite (sp) that the insurance co uses and they guaranteed the rain sensor would work. Anything knew been learned on this since this thread was last active? Anything I should watch out for (eg pillar clips)? Mine (see sig below) is an 05 MCSCa.

Just make sure that they're careful with the clips and put the back on correctly, and that they align the glass properly (using the VIN box to line it up is probably the easiest). Those are the two things that tend to go wrong - people have had clips broken and then the A-pillars go flying, and some people have had whistling caused by the windshield being installed too low or too high.

Safelite did mine before I knew about either of those things, and they did fine

I have my windshield replaced today. Safelite installed it and I didn't even ask what kind of windshield they've installed. How can I identify if it is OEM or PPG?. erm... And what exactly does PPG mean?

Look in the bottom left (passenger) corner. It will probably say PPG.
PPG stands for Pittsburgh Paint & Glass.

I believe PPG is Pittsburgh Pane Glass. Look for the PPG logo on one of the lower corners of the windshield.

The other day I was thinking the PPG windsheild was holding up well. I've had a few hard gravel hits, so far so good. Then we got snow and cold nights, and then a crack started from a chip at the top right (passenger) corner. I have tried to redirect the crack towards the edge with a glass cutter.

So PPG isn't bullet proof!

I was reading one of the early notes here about the car coming out of the dealer with a crack. that is exactly what I believe happened to mine, I have the exact same L shape crack under the mirror. It will be replaced this week by safelite, and i will insist on PPG

Of course not!

Coincidentally, I now have a huge crack (wait, there's more) going across my PPG glass. Am I disappointed? Hell no!

This PPG windshield has lasted 3.5 years before getting this crack. Prior to that I went through 4 OEM windshields in just 2 years.

I'll gladly replace my PPG glass every 3.5 years, after going through OEM hell.

I am assuming that you live in AZ. Where did you get your windshield and how much did it cost? I live in Tucson and when I was on I-10 the other day a Semi truck threw a LARGE rock into my windshield now I have a crack and the cold weather has helped to increase its size....

Another NAM member posted this website..http://www.surfaceshield.com/automotive.htm but I can not find anyone in Tucson that installs it.

I got my windshield replaced by Safelite in Pico Rivera, CA. this past weekend. Took them 2 hours to change it. They crack one of my side plastic molding during installation and is replacing it free of charge. Glass look ok so far except that it didn't have the the fancy bmw logo on it. Paid $195.

Did you have a windshield protective film installed too? I am looking for a REALLY TOUGH protector for my windshield. I have thousands of small chips in my windshield and one LONG crack thanks to a trucker not having mud flaps

Maybe bullet proof glass would work....

$195 is an awesome price. I have to say, my OEM glass made it like 2 months in my old R50...the Safelite replacement was still going strong 3 years later when I traded her in.
