R50/53 John Cooper Works
MINI Cooper S owners seeking an extra dose of power soon will be able to turn to none other than MINI's namesake power broker, Britain's John Cooper Works, for a factory-warranted upgrade that boosts the S from 163 hp to 200 hp.
BMW/MINI will debut the kit at the Geneva auto show next month. Customers will be able to buy the upgrade immediately after the U.S. announcement in New York in April. The kit will be available through designated MINI installers as a new-car option, or as a retrofit on used Cooper S models.
If you want to get on the waiting list, either PM, or e-mail me with your name, address, phone, and e-mail address. This list will be for informational purposes only, and you will not be required to purchase the kit.

Aimee,
Is that confirmed by your sources at MINIUSA? Or is this just from Autoweek?

A question- since I've visited the JCW website a number of months ago and have read extensively about their cars, why is the conversion only to be made available in the US for the S? JCW does a tuning package for the Cooper as well- will we non S owners not get a chance? Hmmm...

Can I ask why you would drop $4-5k for the JCW Cooper kit when it's only 135-140 hp?
An S only costs $3000 more than the Cooper and you would have an engine which has much more potential to develop more power while still doing it in a reliable and streetable way. That leaves $1500 to play with. Do an intake and exhaust for $1000, then take $200 for the MINI madness rear sway and $250 for some H&R springs and now you've got a nicely rounded 175 hp package. Not a bad deal.

Can't speak for zagato, but I was thinking 135hp would feel just about right, especially if torque is increased a bit more, percentage-wise. However, I was also assuming that the final price of the upgrade would have to be less than the $3k gap between an S and a Cooper. If not, you're right, it would make no sense at all.

Have a friend with a MC with sport suspension, light alloys and Yoko tires, had chip tuning, an air intake and exhaust done by a tuner in San Diego, the tuning, air intake and exhaust was around $1200 I think.....and he now has an MC that is quicker than my stock MCS (did get rid of the awful runflats and 17" wheels) off the line and about the same performance at high end....plus there is no question is quicker through the corners than my MCS because of the weight advantage....of course you can tune a MCS to make it quicker, but many like my firend like the looks of the MC better and also like the spare.....so the works seems like it makes sense for the MC except it does seem a little pricey compared to aftermarket tuning....
