MY NEW MINI is DEAD

It was a short run. I had my car for 2 weeks (MCSa)
I got stuck in a tunnel called Hubbards Cave on the Kennedy
expy in Chicago at 1am where a water main broke.
I took in water up to the bottom of my glove box. About a hour
after the main was plugged DOTtowed out my car my whole
interior was covered in in dirt and soot and There was about 2
inches of water on the floors and water puddledon the rear seats.
The electrical system was going mad. The lights and wipers
were going off and on. One of the windows was down and
wouldn't go up. The dash lights were blinking.
It was just an F-IN mess.

I took about a hour for the water to start creeping in and I
was completelyhelpless. After a another 15mn it was time to
abondon ship. When I opened the door and the water just came
pouring in. I was just so bummed. The water was 2ft deep
where I was at and 3 ft at the source.

So now I'm at the mercy of the insurance claims guys.
I loved my little guy but I'm hoping they will concider it totaled.

I'll let you know hoe it plays out.
Rub your rabbits foot and your voodoo mojo bags.

So sorry to learn about your incident. It must have been very scary to say the least

Glad you are OK. That's what really matters.

Your MINI will be totalled for sure. No vehicle that has sustained that much water damage can ever be repaired to a safe/driveable state.

Start configuring the new replacement MINI right away.

That sounds like the best option: just start over. I hope it works out for you.

crap dude, that sucks. Hopefully they will totaled it and you get another one just like it or even better. Is there anything you didn't like about this one? I would suggest trying to fix that when you order this next one!

One question though, why was the tunnel flooding, and why were u in there?

Hope everything gets better!

Sorry about your car, & glad you're ok. I'm not an isurance ajuster & I don't play one on TV. If that was my car I'd be praying that they do total it. Cars with that much water damage are never right again. Especially ones with lots of electronics like your MINI. My guess is yep it's a total. I hope they replace it without any trouble for you.

My Saturn was totaled from flooding that didn't even cover the tires (pictures here:http://spinsugar.com/flood/), so I suspect that your mini will be totaled as well.

Wow, that must of been a horrible thing. And to happen to your brand new MINI too.

Well luckily, it was nothing that was your fault, the car will be considered total. And if there were any quirks you didn't like in the first one, you can fix that with the second.

I saw this on the news this evening and was hoping no minis got stuck in it. It looked terrible. I am sure with that much water it will be deemed totalled. I am happy no one got hurt in the flood!!!

Rally it!

Have you had nightmares about this?
Hope a rally team would resurrect it! If it weren't crashed, thrash it!

So sorry. Keep us posted.
Where you scared? Was it happening slowly (apparently?). It sounds awful. I guess nobody had trouble getting out of their cars? Did you drudge through the wet tunnel? I am glad it wasn't worse-people could have been killed?

Hmmm... Lights & all work when the bumper is under water? Thats kind of surprising. Also surprising that it was considered totalled. I'm glad it was for his sake, but some shady insurance companies would say otherwise if they saw a picture like that.

It isn't the electronics that is the problem, it is the engine. The feds have a registry of cars that get flooded in hurricanes/storms so that they can't be dried out and resold to unsuspecting customers. You still have to be smart enough to check the VIN# but it's there.

I know the engine can flood out if not careful in 3" of water... But from what I've seen here on NAM, those whom get water in the engines usually only have to replace the engine.

I've never been in a flood, nor do I know anyone who has, so I'm just asking, while shooting from the hip.

How low is the intake on the mini? Is the air intake right in the middle on the front nose when you open the hood? (on the top) Just wondering how much water the car can take.

Chicago only floods when a watermain breaks or we punch a hole in the river.

Sorry for your loss studog.

As if driving on the Kennedy wasn't hassle enough, now we have to be alert for massive infrastructure failures.

I hate to say it but you should be glad your still alive. Who cares about the car. Start again, tell the insurance company you will have to order a new one and that you need a rental car until then. Maybe even see if they can reorder the car for you, maybe they could get it through faster or possibly find one with a few more options in stock somewhere for you somewhere

Some of us who are interested in the Phil Wicks race series next year should think about studog's waterlogged MINI as a race car!
