The Washington Post had an article in it last week saying that the 208 hp MINI Cooper RS will be out soon. Anyone know any details?

This topic has been chatted about in a few different posts, I think they're in "MINI Talk" I'll throw down a few things I know about the RS.

It'll be a late intro MY04, so don't expect to see it much before Jan 04. It'll have at least the HP you heard, and could be up to 240Hp. I've heard from my sources that it'll be all-wheel-drive, but others have heard "definitely not"; just keep in mind that MINI is planning to race the RS in WRC, so it seems an AWD system is appropriate. I dunno if the engine will be super or turbocharged. Not much else will occur. Still a 6-speed manual tranny, maybe some suspension tuning differences, and the bodywork will be almost identical to the MCS.

Cheers,
Ryan

Ya, at our club meeting last night a "to be nameless" dealer employee mentioned hearing from a bigwig at a recent meeting about a "BMW powered engine" with 240hp and AWD. Hmmm...sounds sneakily like the new BMW 1 series engine in a MINI with AWD somehow. Me likes, me likes!!

It would seem like they would have a problem cramming the AWD system in the current Body style... look in your bonnet and boot... not much clearance there for an AWD system.... I tend to lean towards the BMW 1 Engine but not the AWD....
We will see.

The BMW 1 series is RWD. You really think BMW is going to make a car faster than their entry level 1 series?

Would be nice though but in all honesty a 200HP+ MINI is an exageration. I gues they feel the need to compete with the Focus SVT.

That Sti looks fierce.

Maybe MINI should hold off on that 240hp and figure out how to make it 340 hp just to one-up the Sti.

I have seen concept drawings and pics of the Series 1 and looks kinda ugly in my opinion. The 1 series is another reharsh of the Chris Bangle school of automotive design: Controversial at best.

I'll stick with the MINI, thank you.

Hey NFO, did you read about the good news in MINI2.com.....CD update fix 32.1 is already out!!! Whooohooo!!!

With 340 bhp in a car the size of the MINI, I would loose my lisence and/or my life. I am personally happy with 163.

I agree. 163HP is more that I'll ever need. In fact, I find that the current 115HP in our Cooper CVT is enough for everyday driving.

I wanna see how BMW is going to control all that torque steer upfront.

Now that this topis is totally off subject:

Totally disagree. I think that BMW is one of the few companies that is truly and actively attempting to do something new with the design of their cars. Further it's a shame that so much is made of Chris Bangle's design. First off the guy is truly a genious - just listen to him speak sometime. Further he's the head of BMW design. He doesn't really *do* the design work on individual cars. You could make a case that Bangle has as much input to the MINI as he did with the Z4 - but he obviously didn't design either.

OMH the 1 series photos I've seen are tight and precise designs. They gives nods to the past design language of BMW while creating something new. I can't wait to see them in person as it will be an extraordinary car.

I certainly respect your opinion. I am personally not impressed by Bangle's efforts of late and the BMW 7 series is controversial and low sales seem to confirm that current and prospect 7 series owners are not moved by the current car due to its hideous looks and complexity (i-drive), etc.

The Z4 is disjointed to my eyes. Everytime I see one it reminds me of a Pontiac, not a BMW.

There is a very interesting critique in Autoextremist.com about Chris Bangle that hits it dead on the head. Let's just say that Bangle is far from being the 21st century Harry Earl..

Personally I believe that the Coooper RS will be the US marketing term for the factory backed John Cooper Works package. It'll most likely have about 200hp

About the 7 series sales figures this is from a recent BMW press release:

"Dr. Panke described the worldwide launch of the new BMW 7 series model range and the start of the BMW Z4 Roadster in the USA as major milestones in the past financial year. In the first year after the model change of the 7 series, over 60 percent more vehicles were sold than in the previous year"

"This was the best year ever for 7 Series sales, as customers responded to the all-new model, which went on sale last January," said Ed Robinson, Executive Vice President - Operations for BMW of North America, LLC. "Sales of BMW models across the board were strong.

Look at this picture.... now is it really that ugly? IMHO this si a tight little design...it has the styling of the BMW's we know. It is reminiscent of Hondas and mini and even the Clio... Yet it is a BMW... and with RWD... awesome... throw the MINI shell atop that deal!

A bmw by any other name is simply a MINI. That doesn't fit...

I'm sure the 1 Series will do well, after seeing the appeal of the compact coming back...

I see it this way, have 170 hp to the front wheels and 170 hp to the rear wheels. Now that'd be a blast. Gotta remember, hp in a MINI isn't for going fast top end, it's about how fast thru the twisties

I want more!

I'm HP starved!

I thought that the torque steer was gone due to equa-length drive shafts??? Also won't AWD help out with distributing the power???

I searched the Washington Post archives and found no mention of a MINI Cooper RS. Sounds bogus unless you give us a link to the story.

I was told today by someone at MINIUSA that the dealer was mis-quoted. Supposedly there is no MINI RS coming out anytime soon. I'll find out the deal in March when I goto a manager's meeting.
