Cold Air + Light Wheels = Woo Hoo!

It was in the upper 40s here in SF for my morning commute, and this meant the densest, coldest air to hit my JCW intake in quite a while. That would be good in and of itself. But combine the O2-laden atmosphere with a "new" set of Centerline RPMs and Toyos (Thanks, nparker! ) in place of the S-lites and runflats, my recent H-sport Comp rear bar, and... Holy Crap!! After 30k miles, I now love this car more than ever.

hehe, that's cool. Here in chi-town when the cold/dry air hits, we get the oxygenated gas...so the motor doesn't perform as well as it should.

I noticed my MC was pulling a bit stronger with teh onset of colder air, but it also could have been in my head

I just picked-up a JCW intake (no injectors) from Helix in PA, and I was wondering if you need to reflash the ECU to make the JCW flap open at 4500 RPM?

My MINI dealer won't do the install since I didn't buy it from them.

P.S. My 06 was way too clean and I thought it needed a little Crap!

Doubtful. The intake doesn't add enough HP like the full TC.

Sorry, can't help you there - I've got the full JCW treatment, so didn't deal with how to install the intake alone. I'm sure I've seen several threads on the subject, though. Hunt around a bit and you'll find an answer.

You do not need a reflash to make the flap open at 4500.

You just need to tie one end of a 3 ft length of twine to the flap, pass the other through the fire wall and tie it tightly around the pinky finger of your left hand. Keep an eye on the tach and tug gently but firmly as the needle crosses 4500rpm.

BUT, to do that correctly you need the "refined" JCW CRAPPY twine. Otherwise, it just any other aftermarket mod.

JCW Intake Reflash Part II

My previous question about the need for a JCW intake reflash has taken an interesting turn.

Last week I had a competing MINI dealer on Long Island install my JCW intake since my dealer would not do the installation (purchased the intake from Helix).

The service manager tells me the install went fine, but they had to order new ECU software from MINI since the build date on my 06 MCS is too new. I mentioned that I thought a reflash wasn't necessary since I didn't get the injectors. Service manager says that the intake has a 70mm opening compared to the stock 50mm and MINI USA confirmed that a reflash is required to take full advantage of the intake and should be available in about three weeks.

So if MINI says you need to reflash the ECU with the JCW does that mean that in order to get full potential of any intake i.e. the Alta or K&N Typhoon you need to reflash the ECU?

Exactly! And I've never heard of that. I'm just going to play this out and see what happens when the reflash is made available.
