1) Wiggle the shift **** back & forth a couple of times in the neutral gate (to make sure it's in neutral) with your fingers and thumb.
2) Pull the shift **** with your fingers toward you to over-ride the first/second gate and then...
3) Push the shift **** with your palm away from you.
Forcefully - you won't hurt anything.
And don't worry, things will loosen up with a few hundred miles. Mine did. The Xmsn is tight when new.

It is difficult for my wife to get into reverse ... requires two handed effort and it aint getting easier. I just tell her to go forward and forget about backing up

I'm a girl and with 18000 miles on my '05 MCS, on occasion I still have to use two hands to get the car into reverse...doesn't matter to me, but my brother makes fun of me when he's in the car and I do it.

DITTO - two hands here. Always. In fact, it's just habit. I'm GLAD it takes a bit of force to get it to go. That way, I don't accidentally but it in reverse when I want to go into first!

I did this once - in freeway traffic! I think I scared the bejeezus out of the car behind me. I don't know if it was the lever or the gearbox or just me getting panicky, but I couldn't get the lever to get into 1st. After trying everything, I finally got the lever pressed forward, but I was in reverse.
Not one of my prouder moments, but I didn't have to worry about that car tailgating me the rest of the way home. I almost always go into 2 before pushing up into 1 (all with the clutch in, I don't actually use 2) - it's generally easier, and it keeps me out of R.
