another odd thing I have noticed...

When I go to fill up the gas in the car, when I take the cap off, the tank opening makes a whistling sound, like wind across the top of a bottle. it does this with very little air moving around it, too!

An oddity, or something I should be concerned about? Anyone else notice this?

My S does this sometimes too. It's an over active bladder
The fuel tank has a rubber bladder that contracts and expands. Sometimes you can hear it sort of scrunching inside as you fill up.

The gas tank on all MINIs is pressurized. You can hear the pump working when you first start the car - it's a little whine sound, similiar to the power steering motor, but coming from the rear.

Here's a good noise:

When I fill my windshield washer fluid container it whistles as it gets close to full.

I think it's just a quirky air flow thing, but OTOH, it's a great help in a dark parking lot!

Just about every car does this. My old 98 Maxima (R.I.P.), 98 Civic (R.I.P.), 02 Pathfinder, sister's 03 Jetta, bro's 92 Camry, even my beater 95 Tracker does this. It's so common I never heard of a car that doesn't do this. I think even my lawnmoar does this...
