building a mini online vs. buying one from dealer

Ok everyone i hope to soon get my own mini and feel very strongly that somebody is finally gonna buy my 68 mustang, but i have a few questions...

I want to build my own mini, but ive heard there is a waiting list...if so how long?

also... in general, how much other than the cost you see online after building your mini will it cost for shipping etc?...im sure it varies, but would just like an idea

would it be better to build my own if wait is too long or shop around and talk to my dealer... i plan on visiting my dealer soon and like the mini site says its unlikely youll see two identical minis

and as far as any suggestions on what to get within about $29,000 or less to do...im just now getting into buying one and like many different color choices but want to get ideas...Thanks

Where are you located? This can affect how long it takes for a custom ordered Mini to get to you...

Am I correct in thinking that you cannot get a Mini unless you go through a dealer? Building the mini online is just to get an idea of total cost, and to see all the available options. But in the end you still have to special order it through a dealer correct?

You're in luck if you find a vehicle just like you'd configure it on the showroom floor, perhaps you'll get lucky that way.

i figured youd have to go through a dealer, but if anyone has built one and had it shipped... around how much difference was the online number and the final dealer number?

I ordered my MINI from Murray in Utah and the price was MSRP (just exactly what is on the website) plus $375 "prep" charge. Different dealers charge different amounts to prep the vehicle, which seems to be basically get it ready to leave the lot (inspection, paperwork, permits, etc.) and some throw in floor mats. $375 is a lot but I went with Murray because they are the closest to me that charge MSRP and don't have a huge wait time (8+ months.)

the numbers are the same, but you have to ad sales tax, and some of the accessories cost some dealer installation fees, also the dealer prep at some places. pretty much everyone orders a mini from a dealer, they are built in the uk then shipped to the US. some people are able to find a mini they are looking for already built and at the dealer, some dealers don't even have any mini's for sale at the dealership!

///tripplebeem kewl sign on name do0D!! is it what i think it is

**hutto,
**mine took four months to arrive**
i custom Ordered mine on-line and picked it up at a dealer all i paid for was freight nothing else like: prep fees and such freight at the time was i think 395 0r 495$$ their was of course the processing fees wich was 120$$....ibought in a different city from where i lived so tags/taxes i dont remember
it would b better if u look around alot cuz dealers can get away w/alot if u dont shop and check out several of them for ex: a couple dealers here tried to pull that 1000$ sign up fee( waiting list) but this was over 2 yrs. ago so not sure if they still do this (i paid 1000$$'s but it was a down payment which was part of the ptice of the car) another tried to charge me an extra 500$$ for car mats and prep/ delivery & paint maitanence when u come in for ur scheduled/free visits which is about 2 or three times -not worth it-
another tried to charge me a order fee that was not refunded or worked into the price of the car. so jus do some serious homewerk......shipping is the same as freight so about 3 to 5oo dollars $$ but u will see that online when u order ur ride
u really need to get as much as u can aford to pay monthly cuz u will b payin' it for a while unless ur into some serious cash w/ur mustang sell
29k is a good Grip go crazy when i got mine i paid right under 23k and got a whole lot of stuff except that Nav. system not worth it u can get better ones aftermarket jus an opinion......
r u getting a Vert? 0r hard top?

It takes roughly eight weeks from order date to get a MINI to your specs. Well worth the wait. The destination charge is $450 whether you order it custom, or pick one off the lot. The waiting list depends on the dealer. Don't believe there's a wait in TX, but I don't know for sure.
The price will only vary based on the 'dealer prep' charge, and install charges for any accessories (section 5 of the build process.)
Does the $29K include tax? Even if it does you can get a WELL optioned car for that.

hutto, welcome to NAM! What those of us who spec'd out our MINIs did was build them online at MINUSA.com, to figure out exactly what we wanted, then faxed or emailed that to whichever MINI dealership we worked with. As far as I know, it is not possible to build one in the UK and have it shipped....you have to go through a dealership. I've heard good things about the Texas MINI dealerships. And with a budget of $29K, you can get a wonderfully loaded one!!!

Spec out your ideal car on the web site and then go see what your Dealer has on the lot and also what is due to come in. A good “Motoring Advisor” should be able to help you decide on the different options. The Dealers seem to order & stock vehicles equipped with what most folks in the area have ordered in the past.

As for the $350 delivery charge…..that is nothing compared to $1500 delivery/set-up fee charged on a new motorcycle and a small percentage of the total cost of the vehicle.

The difference between ordering and choosing off the lot may well boil down to price. I purchased my red 05 S off the lot, which had a sticker price of $33,800 for $27,000 out the door (this includes tax, licensing, delivery). And this is in SoCal, where the going price for a Mini is high.

I really wanted a dark silver S…………….but I can live with red for $10K off. See my point?

I built my car on line, printed it off, took it to the dealer and that is what I got. The prices were the same as they were online except for what the dealer adds on. There were so many options though that somehow I missed ordering the alarm system. Six months later I now have it. I went to a mini lot the Sunday before my car was to arrive at my dealer and saw shinny chrome wheels (that were not online). I went home to get my digital camera and went back and took a picture. I took this to the dealer on Monday and ordered these wheels. Fortunately they had a set. They were were on my car when I picked it up Thursday of the same week. This was a costly item but I really like the wheels as I have the chrome packages inside and out. ski

Hutto, I live in Houston and have just ordered a new custom build. Either of the two Houston dealers should be able to get you a custom build with a minimum wait, say 6-8 weeks after order. They also each keep a few cars on the lot at most times, so you might find something you like with no wait. Both Mini of the Woodlands and Momentum charge MSRP, MOTW has no other additional "dealer" fees, I've been told Momentum slaps on a $495 charge at the last minute. A straight deal in Texas should be MSRP, sales tax of 6.25%, license tags around $70, and a fair document fee around $50. Anything else is additional dealer profit.

I was pretty lucky. When I moved for the summer to LA I had to get a ride (LA without a car is next to impossible). So I looked on the mini website and it would take about 3 or 4 months for delivery and that was too long. Drove around a couple mini dealers and when I was about to give up BAM! Truck shows up with this beautiful Jet black MCS. One hour later paid for it picked up next day.
So, I believe that you can find what you are looking for in the lot, but if you have the time might as well make your own to the exact specifiation right?
Mine is, but it was a lucky draw.

The problem with dealer prep, (maybe everyone knows this), is that it is included in the MSRP on the car. When "dealer prep" is tacked on it's really an additional profit for the dealer, above MSRP. This is why I paid no additional dealer prep when I bought my 03. I also negotiated a $350 discount to take care of the "documentation fee" and city tax. Your total cost should not exceed the MSRP on the factory sticker on your car.

I'm sure this can be done.

Expect to pay MSRP or thereabouts whether you order or buy off the lot. Few dealers have a lot of loaded MCS's on the lot, FWIW.

But forget all that - I wanna see pics of the Mustang!

I ordered mine online and designated Keeler Mini in Albany NY as my dealer. I paid MSRP and no "prep" charges, just tax and registration. It took five weeks for the car to be built, shipped and delivered. Nothing they had on the lot came close to what I wanted.
